Truly Tropical--About 35 Varieties of Mango
« on: June 13, 2015, 04:29:28 PM »
As of this Saturday 7/13, Truly Tropical in Delray Beach (http://delraymango.blogspot.com/) has around 35 varieties of mangos for sale.  Which ones should I definitely try?  I'm thinking Dot, Cushman, and Edward.  I've already tasted Mallika and PPK.  How about Mulgoba?  I missed today, but I'm thinking about going by on Wednesday.

Lemon Merengue (PPK), if fully ripe is hard to beat!
I would also get Dot, Cushman, Jakarta, southern blush, PSM, mulgoba, zinc, dwarf hawaiian.

Rob will disagree, but out of those choices, these are the ones that would interest me.

What is Big Jim?  Maybe Har can weigh in...

I would second your and Jeff's thoughts.  I remember quite liking Zinc.

You might try Cogshall too, if you haven't already.

I still have fond flash backs about the Bailey's Marvel mangoes I've had at TT. Dupuis Saigon, Dwarf Hawaiian, ZINC and Alphonso were also runner up mangoes I've had there.

I purchased 4 mangos--an Edward, a Mulgoba, a Cushman, and a Dot.  It cost me $12 ($3 per lb.). Yikes!  (Please don't tell my wife.  She'd kill me.  A neighbor gives us shopping bags full--but not of the above varieties.)  The Mulgoba and the Cushman had soft spots when I cut them open--either internal breakdown or they were damaged during picking and left in the sun too long--so it was a little hard to determine their true flavor.  Major disappointment.  The Pickerings I'm getting from my little tree are way better.  I'm convinced more than ever of the need to grow your own fruit.

Did she raise her rates? She and Walter used to charge $2 / pound. $3 / pound would be steep.

Yes, definitely worth growing your own.

Apparently I haven't been over there in a while -- I guess the prices went up last year. That stuff is green gold. Sure am glad my own trees are producing. At the rate I go through mangoes, it would cost me more to feed my mango habit than a heroin addition !

If you get there again you might want to mention that a couple of your mangos were not good.
I wouldn't be surprised if they offer to replace them.
Since mangos are a natural product it isn't possible to guarantee quality for each and every one.
