Asian grey weevil
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:21:49 AM »
Hi,
Has anyone found something that controls Sri-lankan aka Asian grey weevil?  They are not as bad as last year, but I still see them. They have been chomping on my mangoes, soursops, etc.  I put down some benifical nematodes this year, but I'm still having problems. I have done a lot of research on these weevils and have found no control.
Thanks in advance!
Kevin

You have to eliminate their grub stage to rid the weevils.  A godd drenching with commercial grade Imidacloprid should do the trick.  I know there are a lot who do not like the use of such chemicals but sometimes there is no option...and since nematodes have been tried, chemicals may be the only option (barring trying a different type of nematode).

I dont know the size of them but i want to try fine plastic mesh over the mulch to prevent from weevils. They sell that in black color and maybe it can lock them up in the soil. If you have a huge yard with mulch then this would be an option i guess.

maybe spraying leaves with something like peppermint oil, neem oil or capsaicin oi, will make them unappetizing to the weevil ?

Has anyone tried Spinosad?  I just sprayed my new sweetheart lychee. No idea if it will work or not.

I tried Spinosad, it did not work.  The benifical Nematodes are helping. I'll need to put more of them down in spring.
The Spinosad is working on the citrus. It totally stopped all the leaf miners.
Thanks!!

What kind of nematodes are you using?  Where did you get them?

check out the info on florida leaf notchers vs sri lankan weevils- there are some differences in ferocity.

Rob is correct about systemics- the natural stuff does not do much. I am not sure about the nematodes, however ( I am going to try them myself)

Imidacloprid is the only thing which really works. But you don't have to treat the trees if they are doing well- the damage may just be cosmetic.
