I have a lot of respect for the knowledge of Pacific Islanders when it comes to breadfruit, cocos, taro, etc. the thing is that I’ve seen breadfruit get sick and die after the root suckers were dug up. Now, the trees were able to produce other suckers that survived so it wasn’t a total loss. Caribbean people have only been cultivating breadfruit for a little more than 200 years. Perhaps they have a point when it comes to growing here. I am aware that root cuttings are traditional and that’s the way I started here but it did affect a tree of mine and then I heard of this risk.
Despite all this the most common way to reproduce breadfruit in the caribbean is to dig up root suckers. Most local farmers do not understand layering or grafting onto bread nut
It's possible you have some soil disease that is not present here that enters the roots?

That's exactly what I tought!
Something in the soil might afect the tree if a wound is created in the roots.

It is quite unlikely, but don't Forget that you can graft a loquat on a quince, that has quite different habits than the first, and it's a good match, so… Who knows...

Hi, I need male Carica Quercifolia (oak leaved papaya)
How curious, all my plants are female and giant monsters but without male no chance.

Cuttings or young plants. Only in EU.

muchas gracias

I recently got some cuttings of it, if they root, in a few months we can trade one male, for one of your females, to increase the genetic diversity of my colection. If you're interested in trade of course.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cocos nucifera Growing in Madeira...
« on: October 24, 2019, 04:22:33 PM »
I do not believe that is it really a Cocos or Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera). I can imagine that there are planted some individuals of Cocumbe Palm, Synonyme Quito Palm or Mountain Cocos Palm(Parajubaea cocoides) - this species is much more robust than Cocos nucifera and both species are looking very similar!

The palms in Madeira Island that were mentioned (and pictured) by Steven in this post, are really Cocos nucífera.
The palms are in fact very different from Quito Palm, as the last has a lot of fibers on the trunk and between the palm stalks, and Coconut palms don't.
And yes some of these palms in Madeira Island produce fruit, but they're fast removed by the city employees. Once I asked why did they removed it, and one told me that it was superior's orders, to avoid a nut falling over somone's head (dumbest excuse for me...).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Poll: Meliponiculture
« on: July 20, 2019, 06:29:18 PM »

Can anyone tell me if these are stingless bees? They're about 1cm long.

Solitary bees probably. Maybe Andrena or Megachilidae but scopa aren't clear in the photo

Stingless but will not make colonies and are unable to make honey, They are really good pollinizators for Fabaceae and other plants in any case.

Thank you for your answer and help.
I got to know, that there are a few species of stingless bees here in my Island but it seems that all of them are solitary.
I'm preparing traps, to see if I can atract any of these, and use them as polinators, but odd seem to be very low. There's always the possibility of getting a species of social or semi social bees, as some experts say that there are still many species to be identified here in the Island…

Hera are some others that I've photographed in the last year.

Are these broadbeans growing allong with it?
If yes there's a Orobanche sp. that specializes in parasiting these.

Hi have 6 Bacon seeds right now.
PM me if interested.

I'm interested in 2 of your varieties.
I have 2 varieties, that I don't know the name, but have very good quality.
Let me know if you're interested!

Ps. I can only take scions from May onward.

42
The number 54, that you don't know what it is, seems to be some kind of Pouteria Sp.
The seeds look a lot like Pouteria seeds, and also the fruit morfology it's very close to this genus.
Did you noticed any latex on the plant?

Not sure if these are really fruits, or just seed pods.
They look a bit like tobacco (seed pod and flowers), so I wood guess this cood be some kind of Solanaceae.

45
These are not tree like, but produce good fruit and have a fast growth:
Cucurbitaceae like melons, watermelons, cassabanana, etc. Pineapples are also good ones, as well as passionfruits.

Have some Cherry of the Rio Grande seeds for sale or trade.
price is €1 per seed plus shipping. Minimum order is 10 seeds.

Also have some Solanum robustum seeds. 20 seeds for €3 plus shipping.

47
Wich plants are you searching for?

I don't have phytosanitary certification, but I can make the plants being inspected, by appointment with the local phytosanitary services. It might take some time, and it has additional costs, but can be done.
Also I'm in EU.

Grapebush: Yes, I got your post on Facebook, that is terrible what happened. They have small greenhouses here that you can fix to the wall on your balcony, I will send you a link soon, that might be a good idea to protect your plants. I have been able to overwinter these ones inside last winter, next winter they go into an I heated greenhouse, so I don’t know if they’ll still look as good this time next year. ???

Cassio: thank you for the extra information. It seems the trees from your seeds remain a little bit smaller than some of the others. They didn’t set any fruit this year, but if they bloom again next year, I hope they will. If the fruit turns out to be to sour for my taste - I have never tasted any Uvaia yet - I will still keep these ones and try to cross them with a sweeter type. I think the fast fruiting is a very attractive trait in these rare fruits!

Thank you for the tip, Solko.
As soon as my economical situation allows, I intend to build myself a new greenhouse from scratch, with steel frame and policarbonate cover, but it might take a while before I'm able to buy all the tools and materials I need to do that, so you can send the link, please.

My adult plants are starting to form flower buds, let's see if this time I will taste any fruit.

The smaller ones (about same age as yours) are starting to put some new leaves, and branches, after the previous ones were completely blown by the stormy winds from last winter. A few of them died because of that.

49
Yours are looking much better than mine, but I must say, I'm not giving too much attention to thm lately, specially after what hapened to me last winter.
Have some older ones flowering for the second year; let's see if this time they will set some fruits to taste.

50
If you want to wait a few weeks, I can prepare airlayers of Inga feuillei and Inga edulis.

I would also be interested in this.

Didn't know if you notice that I'm outside USA?
I can prepare it and ship to you, but don't know if they will reach you, because of the restrictions of your customs, in what concerns plant import.

Cheers,
Nélio.
