Zill's Black Suriname Cherry
« on: April 26, 2019, 09:20:33 PM »
I watched for days for my very first ever Zill's Black Suriname Cherry to ripen. I was surprised at how fast it went from yellow-green to red to purple. I anticipated sharing it on Sunday with my girlfriend. But early this evening I found something decided to try it first. GRRRRR. I ate it anyway... Enough resinous flavor to remind me it was a Suriname Cherry, but deeelicious. Any idea what bit into it? I'm thinking a bird. Has anyone else eaten taste-tested fruits?

From my fruiting Zill Black SC plants, I've seen birds and lizards sampling ripe fruit.
The Earth laughs in flowers. And bear gifts through fruits.
No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)
F*ck squirrels and deers

Do you know what kind of lizards? I'd think in 10b it would be iguanas, but so far the only lizards I've seen in 9b are the ubiquitous brown anoles, the less common green anoles, and a few whiptails. I guess the anoles could taste them at least for hydration--it *was* a juicy cherry!

In answer to your second question....yes I have often munched the untouched side of figs, apples, jujubes, pears, Barbados cherries etc. I had a guava in my yard that the squirrels would bite every fruit. I often had to pick them up off of the ground to taste one. We all have to eat, right?

I'm fighting Cardinals right now for my cherries and without some sort of barrier they win.

Actually, the variety name is 'Zill Dark'.

Someone at the nursery doing the tag printing switched to "Black Surinam Cherry", even though this variety is very obviously not one of those which actually have black color.  It is really very dark purple or blackish-red.

It was selected by Dorothy Zill, who suggested that I save it, when she saw that I was digging up other Surinam-cherries to save when the old nursery was sold to developers.  I named it 'Zill Dark.'

Wow, thanks for the info and history of the Zill Dark, Har! Though perhaps not fully ripe (thanks to whatever decided to sample it), does it appear my grafted tree was accurately labeled? Thanks!

Is there both a Zill's Black and Zill's Dark?
