Persimmon
« on: June 08, 2018, 05:54:24 AM »
I planted a florida persimmon in the ground with a SE exposure but it is not growing. Tje leaves sll have numerous black spots on them and no new leaves are appearing. It gets water snd fertilizer and has grown little since I planted it from the nursery 3 gallon pot, it is mulchec too with the cheap red mulch from Lowes.

You didn't say when it was planted.  And what is the variety?

I planted it last year mid summer. The nursery got them from Zill, no variety listed but should be soft variety.

From what I understand they only grow in spring and earlier summer.
Then it sits...

My persimmons pushed heavily through spring and are slowing down now as fruit has set.
I have Hachiya and Fuyu in California, 9B. I wouldn't expect yours to grow much until next spring, but that's just my experience. I've only been watching these trees for two seasons though. They are already established and ~25ft tall.

I think the only persimmon Zill grafts is South Florida aka Hudson. It is probably ultra rootbound like every other persimmon I have seen that wasn't purchased bare root. I would give it some more time.

You really should have had some spring growth.  I always strip the old leaves from mine during winter to stimulate new growth since persimmon is a deciduous tree.

South Florida is a very good persimmon for our area--about the best one we can grow successfully.  It tends to set a lot of fruit, but the fruit is small.  It's been very slow-growing for me, and the fruit is not super-sweet, but still I enjoy them.
