Tropical Fruit trees that does well in containers?
« on: September 11, 2019, 04:46:12 PM »
Hi, is there a list of trees that do well in containers?  I am out of ground space, and I have these currently in 10 gallon containers.

1. airlayered guava
2. soursop
3. atemoya
4. longon from seed
5. sapote
6. condo avocado

I was thinking of getting some cherimoya trees for containers also.

I ordered some seeds yesterday for a few various anonnas to keep in pots. I keep a couple mangoes in pots as well as a jackfruit damaged two winters ago and a sugar apple(both of the latter who seem to be thriving). Pineapples do well in pots. My Miracle Berry does excellent in a half barrel pot with added compost, pine bark mulch, and some acidifier.

Thanks for the info. I had 2 miracle berries in pots, they didn't make it. I gave up on miracle berries.  I had a 9ft jackfruit in the ground, first year. It died from the cold, and then the crazy rain we had last winter in So. Cal.

Mango, fruit and does well in containers? I might think about that.

I just joined this forum, so apologies if figs aren’t considered tropical fruit that you’re looking for, but just FYI, they make great container trees if your goal is something that will provide fruit from a pot.

Thanks all for the input.  I am not a fig person, other than fig newtons.  I do have dragon fruit in containers.  I might try papaya in containers. I currently have 2 papayas in the ground.  I have 1 jabo in the ground.  I never tasted jabo before, so not sure if i want to get another one until i know :D

I guess in theory all mangos if pruned heavily could go in pots but there are some less vigorous that do better than others. Pickering and Graham immediately come to mind as being condo varieties. Also add Barbados cherries. Best of the tropical "cherries" in my opinion. My in ground died from the cold a couple years back and this thread reminded me I want another one for a good sized pot. Might have to go look at my nursery down the street after work.

Thanks for the info.  Not sure if I want to pot mango, and only get like 1 or 2 fruits a year.  I have a barbados in the ground since Nov. 2018.  It was in a 5gallon pot.  It's huge now. I just pruned it back a few days ago.  There have been flowers, but no fruit.  Hopefully next year.  A lot of ppl i know don't like the cherries because they are so sour.

Last winter 2018, it got into the low 30s + we have crazy rain where my trees (newly planted) were under about 2-3" of water.  I was glad the only casualty was the Jack Fruit.

Jaboticaba is the ultimate container tree in my opinion.

The slow growers will usually do better. Garcinias are another option, but they have a long Taproot.

I would say the guava and atemoya would do best in containers.
