Kei apple....worth growing?
« on: August 14, 2018, 11:39:51 PM »
In a not so great part of my yard, I had a male and female Kei apple growing.  Well, no rain in July and 113 degree temps killed the female , but, I still have the male.  Question, is it worth reinvesting in the female? Is the fruit even something I would want eat?  I don't have a lot of property. Would be easier to plant something there more AZ desert native, but, if I hear good things, I will do the extra work.

Check out this thread over at the growing fruit forum...

http://growingfruit.org/t/kei-apple/4908

The way he espaliered his saved a lot of space and made it more managable. He also talks about how he uses them.

I hope it is ok to post a link to another forum.

The fruit is absolutely delicious. Juicy, sweet, great flavor, and you can eat it whole. I'd grow it except I have very cramped space so a thorny plant like that isn't suitable for me. But the San Diego Zoo has a bunch of them spread out so I help myself to a bit of the fruit sometimes when I visit it.

I'm a big fan. The ones I ate had the texture of a tomato with a perfect sugar and acid balance.

Interesting. Purdue has a different take on it calling an acid fruit making it sound pretty sour. https://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/kei_apple_ars.html
