Chinese jujube is grown in temperate zones. I believe the Honey Jar is a Chinese variety.
I live in 9b and tried to grow several Chinese jujubes and so far they have not thrived or fruited?

Here in Southwest Florida, Thai Giant seems to be the only variety that does well here.

I haven't tried a lot of varieties, but my favorite is Sugarcane.
-
They not only grow in Texas, they become invasive. IOW, be careful what you ask for. Supposed to be very tasty.
-
i have li mild flavor but really easy to grow
have anyone try eating them dry i going to this year

Honey Jar is excellent. Very flavorful. GA-866 is also an excellent flavorful jujube (but a very shy bearer). These are my favorites.
Shanxi Li is a very close second for flavor. And also very moist by jujube standards. Has a huge plus that the fruit is very large compared to most jujubes
Li tastes like styrofoam, and has the same texture.
I also had another variety (Indian Green?, something named like that) that was wonderful! It almost had a pear flavor to it. I need to try and track that one down.
-
I had a smaller green type before, it tasted mostly like a green apple, but it has a unique 'fragrance' or aftertaste that accumulates after eating a few. I would say if you like apples you would like that kind.
This variety is currently saturated online sales here in Thailand, a large recent import of trees and air layerings... what do you call call it?

Love jujubes! Growing the Indian green, I think. Very refreshing fruit

I have li and although it produces well, we never have enough. I have heard sugar cane and honey last do not produce well, not sure if it's pollination issue.

Thank you all for replies.
I read that jujube tastes like dates which I do not like. But I read quite a few posts with people loving this fruit and comparing it with really good apple which I love...so let’s give it a try. Honey jar - I am coming to adopt you into a loving home. :)

There is two kinds of flavor mostly. The one that is super sweet without tartness(this is the one compared to dates) and the kinds with more balanced sweet/tart flavor( this is probably what people compare to apples).
I can't stand the sweet one, but it seem much more common in commercial varieties.
Judging by the name, "Honey jar", I'm quite sure it's the sweet kind comparable to dates, so I would avoid it in your case.
Then it also depends on the level of ripeness, some people wait for them to wrinkle so that it gets even sweeter.
Of course there are in between varieties, but you get the idea.

They taste nothing like dried dates to me. Perhaps dried Jujubes do. I have not tried those. I do like dates and would be happy if they did.
As others may have mentioned here are a couple of things to keep in mind with Honey Jar and most Jujubes;
1. They root sucker a bit, so you will see the rootstock pop-up in your garden.
2. They are thorny, including the rootstock
3. The fruit is relatively small
Given those I'll still grow them any day!
Try eating the fruit with a light beer or white wine ;)

I'm glad you decided to get a tree. Don't even try the ones at the Asian markets. They somehow get really bad quality fruits ever since after the first year they sold them there. Maybe they're very under developed.
Jujube tastes like jujube. The good ones are sweet and juicy during the crunchy stage. They all become chewy and sweet when dried. There's a single elongated seed inside each fruit. At different stages of development, it might remind people of something they've had before.
One problem with comparing tastes before actually tasting the fruit is that people have their own preference for certain things. I don't prefer to eat chicken or apples, but I do like some things that are said to taste like them, including jujube. I guess apple and cherry are pretty safe to compare to since there are things that got named mamey apple and Surinam cherry. Or maybe it's to trick people into thinking they're comparable.
That durian tastes like garlic saying is so very untrue, yet, I'm not sure if that helped or hurt people's willingness to try it.
It's best to try it yourself if you have the opportunity, but don't get the lightweight market jujubes. The heavier ones might have a chance of being decent.
