Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ilama ripened on the tree.
« on: October 10, 2013, 08:11:31 PM »
Nice looking Ilama Luc :). I just noticed we've two Ilama seasons (each lasting about a month), the first starting the year, the main one with Ilama fruit being sold everywhere except in supermarkets of course, even in downtown streets in little stands. The second started just a few weeks ago i think is about to finish.
Mainstream fruit you can find all year round (most of the year) here are: Soursop, maracuyas, papaya, mango, pineapple, ciruelas (several spondias), bananas.

BTW: Luc, Do you know what are the differences between Common Ilama and the one called Papause from Chiapas?

I got Durian and some other from Singapore to Mexico in 19 days, it would have been faster but at that time my city (Acapulco) was isolated by a landslides, broken bridges, and collapsed tunnels for a whole week.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: SYLOGEYNE LONGIFOLIA (Gondo), any info ?

Hi Luc, is this the same as chagalapoli or ardissia compressa?

Yes it's the same fruit . We are not 100% sure what the real scientific name is , a biologist friend says it is Ardisia compresa or revoluta ....Don't you have those in Guerrero ?

Not that I'm aware, at least in the Acapulco area is not known, so... it's another one for the "please Luc add me for some seeds" list ;)

Seems to be a very useful and interesting tree, sorry i have no idea about the pricing, i just know i would like to try growing it, ;) please add me with 10 Seeds, greets.

31
Got them today too, thanks Carlos (any guarana seeds available? :) )

32
Don't forget about me Luc , since the postal service here it's back to normal, save me some cuttings plus any interesting/rare fruit seeds too :)

The cacao sold/grown around here is supposed to be criollo, the white pulp surrounding the seeds has a sweet sour taste, very good, afaik the seeds with white inside are from a improved Venezuelan criollo x forastero hybrid, criollo seeds are light brown inside, when rightly fermented the smell is very rich and fruity.

Last week i found Cuajilote (Parmentiera edulis) in the Market and i tried Sun drying it but i failed, is there a proper way  to do it?, All I'm used to dry under the Sun is fig and it works perfectly. The fruit of cuajilote i found is medium sized and yellow, good to eat raw, the smell and flavor is sweet and fruity, not bad at all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jamaican Cherry or Weed?

If that's Mutinguia calabura then it's both here in Acapulco (and guessing all tropical areas) that's a weed growing everywhere in the city,  it looks the birds love the fruit and have dispersed seeds everywhere, just like parota and mango fruits which are dispersed by bats.

Great to know it Luc, I'm also in the uncaria tomentosa hunt :) , if you get some seeds please remember me too. Greets

pd: Have a great time in Belgium :) , I'll be waiting to know about your fresh seeds after you get back.

I personally like this plant, the one i have has beautifully scented flowers that are followed by lots of fruits, the flavor is strawberry like but with a nice twist that i can't quite describe, i use it alone in cold drinks or mixed with orange or mandarina juice. it tastes good and is very nutritional i heard. This is the kind of very useful plant that has no waste, heres is more used in landscaping for its compact bushy form, for the forked formidable thorns, the showy beautifully scented white flowers and delicious fruit. :)

41
What if we use them seeds to prepare icaco  (cocoplum) milk? ... have anyone tried? almond milk tastes good so it seems worth trying.

42
Judging for what i could eat non stop:

1. White Sapote
2. Rambutan
3. Green Caimito
4. Bananas
5. Black Sapote
6. Green prickly pear

According to Helton's site, Cauabori can be eaten raw or used to prepare juices, sweets and ice creams. I strongly doubt anyone would eat Noni the same way :(
pd: added to the want list ( this or anyother pretty blue fruit :)

Now that's a problem,  i germinated lots of spondias purpureas and spondias mombin but since i have not many space i was planning to keep just one each, it seems i need to keep at least two or three each and hope for the best.  i wonder if is the same for all spondias, because i really really want to grow Umbu (spondias tuberosa) which is uncommon in my area.

Oscar : Oaxaca is a nice place for visiting and being honest is one of the safest States in Mexico.  As Peter said  Huayapam women are producing and exporting the dehydrated Tejate to the US so you just need to find a local  supplier importing Oaxacan goods.

Guanabanus: now that adds one more to the list :) thanks for the info.

According to some articles about Tejate, the foam is mainly produced by the rosita and/or the Mamey seed. Here in Neighboring Guerrero State we also have a cacao based drink called Chilate, instead corn uses rice and cinnamon instead rosita and mamey seed, with not that thick foam yet good flavored.

Yes Oscar, this year on March 24th was celebrated the XIV Feria del Tejate in Huayapan, and next week (24 & 25) is scheduled the VIII Feria del Tejate y Tamal in Oaxaca city, this is part of the biggest Oaxacan celebration called Guelaguetza.

Thanks RenegadeX, I was told the same and since Huayapam is way closer to Oaxaca city than Tlacolula it makes things easier for me. :-)
