FGM: Fairchild Fest photos 4/20 (More photos)
« on: April 20, 2013, 09:10:27 PM »
Some photos from today's garden festival at Fairchild Gardens in Miami. There were lots of tropical fruit for sale at very good prices. Those Miami locals that did not attend missed a great event. I went to Richard Campbell's lecture-tour and Noris Ledesmas's presentation on Mangifera species and both were excellent!

The RFCI had plenty of nice fruits for sale

RFCI Mamey for sale includes Pantin and Magana. I checked them for ripeness and they were perfect

Local Bananas for sale included Goldfinger and my favorite...Nam Wa

Fairchild Farms had several cultivars of mangos for sale including Joellen, NDM, Thai Everbearing, Florigon, Ono and Jean Ellen

Joellen mangos

Nam Doc Mai mango

JeanEllen

Purple Caimitos

E-11 Canistel (Fairchild Farms)

Nice Sapodillas for a buck....you can't beat that!

Jakfruits were $10. I tasted one and it was very good. Not sure of the cultivar.

Sign for the upcoming Mango Festival in July....a great event!

Here's my fruit haul for the day. The Rollinia was mine and the Red Custard is from my friend George. All the other fruits were from Fairchild and were all purchased for under $20

Those are some mouthwatering pics. Nice fruit haul!  Jaks for $10, that's a great deal.

Somebody should ask Richard Campbell his opinion of the Hudson persimmon. ;)

Did you make it down to the festival?  Forgot to mention that Dr. Campbell mentioned that one of the large Durian trees is flowering. I saw it but the flowers are way up in the canopy.

Durian inside the glasshouse is flowering? How tall is that tree?

The flowering Durian in the Whitman Pavillion is probably 18 to 20 foot tall. There is still plenty of room inside to grow some more. Other trees fruiting right now are Langsat and Mangosteen.  Do bats pollinate Durian in Hawaii? Richard told me they are planning on hand pollinating their Durian. The S.A. Sapote (Chupa Chupa) is also flowering.

Thanks Noel. Looks like they're doing a great job inside that glasshouse. How tall is the ceiling inside of it? We only have one type of bat here, the Hoary Hawaiian bat, and it is on endangered list, and hardly ever seen. Durians here i think are pollinated by ants. Hand pollination would definitely be the way to go inside glasshouse.

Nice close up on those fruit Noel. Thanks for sharing.
It's nice to see the fruit set. The Whitman Pavilion will definitely be on the list to visit when I get down to Florida...:) I really want to see one of those Mangosteen flowers in person.

Great report and pics, many thanks Noel. Those E-11 Canistel variety look interesting and yummy, did/have you try/tried any? I wonder how good is their quality when compared to Oro, Trompo and others.

That's a tasty haul right there. Is the Whitman Pavilion open to the public? Do I need a reservation? I'll be visiting Miami in June, planning on visiting Fairchild nursery and Whitman Pavilion. Any other must-hit spots?
Thanks,

I found all three of these to be decent tasting but not hugely better than Trompo or Bruce. Ross Sapote is still the best one of the group

NewGen
The Whitman Pavillion is inside of Fairchild Gardens and is included with the admission. They also just opened a beautiful butterfly house. Fairchild Farms is located in Homestead, around 30 minutes away. Try to also schedule a visit to the Kampong, which is the incredible home and property of David Fairchild. It's open for tours on some Saturdays.  All of these places should be on every rare fruiters bucket list. Send me a PM when you are in town. There was a thread that gave all kinds of information on South Florida fruits sites. You could easily spend 7 to 10 days to see the best places. I have been here 30 years and find new fruit events and places all the time.
