I am currently growing one, they do very well in San Diego.  Unfortunately the one that I have ( grown from a seed) is pretty much inedible. Extremely tannic and tart until the fruits are fall off the tree ripe then they have a slight plum like flavor but are so astringent that I cannot eat them.

If there is someone out there with a superior variety I would love to get some scions and convert my tree over to something useful.

Cheers,
Richard

Hey Patrick,

I have one that produces here. The tag says it is "Katherine Anderson hybrid" It tastes ok, but it does have to be really ripe to taste good.

I have one also that's very good. If it's not fully ripe it's just tart, very little astringency. Good quality fruits. Richard, did you start your plants from seeds i sent you?

Very delicious and no astringency here, 3 x goumi size. A new favorite when in season.

Oscar,

No, the plant i have is from seeds from another source.  I probably should have saved one of the plants from your seeds, but after the second crop of fruit from my tree I gave away all the potted plants I had.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Mark,

Is that the one I brought you one time?  I think Catherine (and the rest of us) never figured out what species that one is.  We suspected it's a hybrid of goumi and something else.

My favorite Elaeagnus is autumn olive -- they're tiny but really tasty.

Hi Barath,

Yes that is the one. I forgot who gave it to me. It is now 9 feet tall.

Thanks

Bastard Oleaster is just another common name (like Soh Shang) for Elaeagnus latifolia.

Yes that's just the english name for same plant. But nobody likes to use it, for obvious reasons!
