Citrus General Discussion / Citrus seedlings with three cotyledons?
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:00:02 PM »
I've germinated over a hundred different citrus seeds (pomelo, lemon, mandarin and orange varieties) and I potted up 18 pomelo and 6 suspected mandarin seedlings this morning and noticed that two of the mandarin seedlings have three cotyledons instead of two.

I'm not sure that they are mandarin seedlings since I put some orange seeds in the same bag and they got mixed around, but I'm fairly sure they are since they were short rounder seeds, compared to the longer seeds of oranges. Half the mandarin seeds were unknown variety and half were Honey Murcott.

There are over two hundred other seedlings I still need to pot up, but I've only got punnets enough for 100 or so for now.

Anyway, has anyone here encountered citrus with three cotyledons?  It looked like only some of the seedlings from the same polyembryonic seed were tricots.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Identify black sapote fruit variety?
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:07:41 PM »
I bought these two black sapote today at the markets and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what varieties they might be?  I'm in Australia so they'd be a variety that is in Aus.

I want to try growing the seeds, if there are any, so I'd like to know what variety the seeds are coming from.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia or A. Squamosa (sugar apple)?
« on: August 12, 2013, 08:15:58 AM »
I ate a custard apple a few months ago and collected the seeds, but only one sprouted and that was months ago.  The seedling is still alive, but barely, so I wanted to try a different Annona variety.

The two I'm interested in are Rollinia and Sugar Apple.  Does anyone have any opinions on taste for these two?  I didn't particularly like the custard apple, but my mum did.  To me, it tasted a bit like sour milk, so I'm hoping these other two taste better than the average custard apple from the markets.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / "Sapote" seeds in Aus?
« on: August 06, 2013, 01:44:47 AM »
I currently have a teeny little 10-12" sapodilla, an abiu, a 'Bernicker' black sapote, and a 'Dade' white sapote.  They're all quite young, none have fruited, and only the white sapote has flowered.

I was wondering if anyone in Australia had any seeds from any of the "sapote" varieties?  I'm particularly interested in the mamey sapote, ross sapote and green sapote, but I'd prefer to grow my own.  I don't currently have the room for anymore trees, so I was hoping to grow the seedlings and then plant them once I've moved or have more room.

I'd love to grow any of the "sapote" varieties, even ones I already have.  I love fruit that tastes like dessert, and you can never have too many delicious varieties!

Please let me know if you may have any seeds available now, or possibly in the future.

Thank you.

Cheers,
Jaz

Hi,

I generally buy my seeds from eBay but it's hard to find many good tasting passiflora varieties on there, and a lot of them are old seeds.  There are some listed on eBay but I was hoping someone here might have some seeds available from the better tasting passiflora varieties in Australia.

I'd be willing to pay for the seeds.  The only seeds I currently have are regular p. edulis that are still in the fruit, so I wouldn't be able to do a trade.  Give me a few years then I'll have seeds from dozens of types of fruit trees.

Cheers,
Jaz
