Did the cold kill my mango flowers and bb fruits?
« on: January 27, 2015, 02:27:27 PM »
To all the experts out there:  the temp dropped to 36 last night, was below 40 for about 3 hours.  I failed to cover my mango trees last night that are full of flowers and bb size fruitlets.  Are the flowers and fruitlets goners?  Or will they survive and grow into beautiful fruit?

hmmmmm......I'm guessing probably not, but a picture a day or two after the event might help shed some clues......

maybe the question should be:  have any mango growers out there  had temps dip to 36 and have damage to flowers and/or little fruitlets?  I looked at the tree today and it seems ok but.....

Likely damaged, but wait and see.  Wind chill is a factor.  Nutritional status is a factor:  concentration of minerals and glucose in cells and sap.

Had the same temperatures and have the same situation that you do. Last year the first bloom was a total loss but the second bloom set seven fruit.
Still to early to tell from last night.

I did put a 500 watt halogen lamp underneath the tree so maybe this added a  degree or two especially for the lower panicles and flowers/fruits

I had a night with frost all over the ground and the new leaves and flowers on my trees did not drop, they don't look the best but now, several weeks later, the bloom is still there and some of the leaves are enlarging. I did not see any frost on the trees or branches, only I the ground. I believe my thermometer read 34F. Good luck with your trees and please let us know if they hold for you.

Thanks for the replies guys!  I will give a report soon on the survival of the flowers and bb fruitlets.  I just finished covering them for tonite as the temp is supposed to be the same for tonite and tomorrow night.  I really envy you guys that live in south florida where you don't have to worry about this cold crap.  Adam, i may swing by Thursday or Friday.

It's the old if you're a brunette,  you wish you were blonde grass is greener thing! :-)

You guys probably have better luck with peaches, nectarines, pineapple guava, muscadines, persimmon, I envy that!

Good luck with the cold!

The fruit sometimes can stay on the tree for a couple months then in march or april the bigger fruit will fall off. Why is your fruit now falling off because it froze in january.

I would be optimistic.  These temps shouldn't cause total loss.  Desiccating winds are the most difficult factor to assess. Of course.....time will tell.
