Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Is Wrong With This Pineapple?
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:34:46 AM »

This is a picture of a 9 month pineapple from the USDA named CB 30.
When I received this tissue culture it looked like the others (normal) with an upright open crown and outstretched leaves. Once established and growing, it took on this aspect of growth. Do some pineapple cultivars normally grow in this manner?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How Long Can You Leave Jackfruit on a Tree?
« on: January 06, 2013, 06:31:32 PM »
Today I saw some jackfruit on a tree grown from seed at a friend's house. They have been there since September. There is already a new fruit growing on the tree. Are the fruit still any good? We have already had a handful of nights in the 40s here.

What is the English translation of Nam Doc Mai, Maha Chanok or any of the other mangos with foreign names like Neelam, Mallika, PSM, etc?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona muricata Seed Variability
« on: September 01, 2012, 08:23:20 AM »
I have been given some soursop seeds and was told they came from a tree bearing very good fruit. How variable will the seedlings be? Will they have fruit that resembles the parent? I have seen (on the web) claims from high variability to relative uniformity from A. muricata seedlings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Harvesting and Ripening
« on: March 29, 2012, 06:24:31 AM »
I have seen Dr. Crane's video on judging the ripeness of mangos in the field.
Mango Maturity How To tell
However, some cultivars need to be treated differently to achieve maximum quality. Apparently Carrie must be harvested at color break and eaten quickly, Mallika needs to be harvested as soon as mature and ripened for a few weeks, Nam Doc Mai has a problem of splitting if left on the tree too long and others can suffer from internal breakdown at times. Does anyone have input on this topic with this year's mango season coming up?
