Citrus General Discussion / Re: Specialties To Look At

I was planning on getting a Sugar Belle.

I'll look into the other two as well.

I would go with an Orlando myself and put in a pollenizer such as a Sunburst tangerine.

The Minneola is good, but needs more care than the Orlando.

We'll, I hope it's good because I unxepectedly stumbled over one today and bought it.

It's a Record Buck tree and looks pretty good.

Please do let us know how to find the backups! There was a lot of knowledge built up there.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Galangal

This is an interesting thread. I just this month acquired some Galangal (A. Galangal) of which I'm pretty certain of the i.d. The month before I also picked up some turmeric and green cardamom plants.

Any tips for keeping them all happy?

Citrus General Discussion / Rhode Red Valencia orange

Thus far my search for a Smith Red Valencia in Florida has been a bust and I'm down to only a few unlikely sources left to ask.

If I can't find that variety I'll go with my second choice - the Rhode Red.

Is there anything to recommend it over an ordinary Valencia other than a somewhat darker color?

Some sources says it has a better flavor, others have said "meh, not much different."  Ripening time and productivity seems to be about the same.

What say you?

Anyone growing the Smith Red Valencia?

What do you think of it?

Also, does anyone know of a source for the Smith in Florida?

Thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Ruby Valencia Great New Citrus Variety

Well, if it tastes and smells like a grapefruit, but won't cause the grapefruit related medication problems I'd be interested in trying one myself.

I'm one of those folks who had to give them up and have regretted it.

It's becoming an open question as to whether commercial citrus in Florida can hold out long enough for the various research projects to combat greening can pay off before it simply stops being commerically viable here.

I will say one thing though, it has certainly spurred research interest in finding alternative crops ranging from low-chill peaches to olives.

A.T. Hagan, great to see you here.  I remember you from the old Citrus Forum.  I have thought about you from time to time, wondering where you went.  I have not seen you in along time.  Excited to see you again.

Hi Millet!  Good to see you again as well.

I was trying to find the old citrus forum again when I came across this place and saw you were the moderator so figured the board must have moved over here.

Is the old board archived anywhere?  There was an awful lot of knowledge contained there.  Would be a pity to have lost it.

Is Dr. Manners still around?  How about Stan McKenzie?

I was thinking of you when I realized over the weekend that I needed to order more calcium nitrate.  Have a wheelbarrow load of coconut husk chips to process and no calcium nitrate to do the cation exchange with.  I'll have more by this weekend.

Yes, everything I've read indicates olives really don't like wet feet!

Fortunately I'm on the sand ridge so that won't be a problem.

Anyone else trying their hand?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing olives?

I'm in the n/c Florida area and after reading several articles about a nascent olive industry slowly coming into being in my state it has piqued my interest.

I have recently acquired the four varieties showing the most promise (thus far) for the northern half of the state.  They're all fairly small so I'm going to grow them out in containers for a while until they're larger then will plant them out.

I'm also looking to pick up some Mission, Sevillano, and Ascalano trees for table olives.

Anyone else growing olives?  What varieties did you choose?  How are they growing for you?

Thanks for the post.

I just ordered some for my trees.

No sign of greening (that I recognize) yet and hope to keep it that way!
