Really nice video, everything is really clear and very informative. Probably the best online grafting video I have seen yet. I would love to see an Annona graft video with another type of graft or a mango graft video. Excellent job  ;D! The video is greatly appreciated

thanks Raul and Nullzero!

Raul, let me know how that graft works out!  I never thought to try those, because the flower type is so different.

Nullzero, really glad u appreciate the video!  I will post an updated video, if, and when the grafts heal.  I made 3 of them, and plan to keep them.  It will be interesting to see how long they take to bear fruit.

I'm going to do one more broadcast at night (in about 1hr)...I think i figured out how to enable chat.  U have to be logged into ustream, but anyone should be able to chat right through ustream (without twitter or facebook).

Great video Adam! Does saddle graft work better than cleft graft for Garcinias? Is it because of the direction of the sap flow? I love all the videos you are creating, please keep it up!

thanks Simon!

I think the cleft graft would work just as well, or better.

I started doing saddle grafts for most of my garcinias because I saw it done this way in a diagram in Bill Whitman's book, 5 Decades with Tropical Fruit.

and if you wanted to play it safe, I would leave the foliage on the scion, and cut the leaves in half, and then bag the scion.

some of the garcinias are probably fickle...if you remove the foliage from the scion, it might cause them to fail.

I believe it's ok to do it with Gardneriana (intermedia, achachairu, luc's limoncillo, imbe, and others), but I have heard people get really good results with mangosteen, when they leave the foliage on the scion, and bag them up.

I will be sure to let you know if the gardenriana grafts take (or if they have trouble surviving).

:o  Raul, I thought you didn't care for achacha that much...
Jejeje,  you are right Jeff!  I was thinking of pulling my single tree cause the first two crops were very acid, but surprisingly the last two ones have change to the most delicious 80% sweetness and only 20 acid, now we love them!  I guess the flavor improves with age..... Now I will consider it on par with Mangostan and the Achacha flavor has more sharp contrast in flavor, only the mangosteen has more flesh...

thanks Robert!

I think the only advantage is, I got to demonstrate a different graft in this video!  LOL

I believe a cleft graft is the most commonly used!

and it's probably best to leave the foliage on the scion and bag it up!

but I always like to avoid bagging a plant if possible...sometimes it's hard to know when to unbag a plant...the buddy tape makes it so you don't have to worry about unbagging....but some plants just hate having their scions defoliated!

I've grafted imbe, with buddy tape wrapped scions, with no problem...I'd imagine most garcinias can be grafted this way...but if you want to play it safe, use a cleft, and bag the scion.

If my grafts take, I'll post an updated video showing the results...

and if they all fail, I'll post a video showing the other method (bagging the scion)  :D

I am going to try a saddle graft today. I just got Morella rubra aka(Myrica rubra) scion and going to graft to Morella cerifera. Saddle graft makes sense if you have limited scion and cant risk it a screwed up cut. The center cut on the scion is simple. The saddle cut on the rootstock may be easier since the branches are held in place for the angled cut.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Looking into this a little more, it looks like they recommend cleft grafts for larger diameter grafting and saddle for the smaller.  One site that specifically mentions mangosteen says that cleft/wedge grafting is used for rootstocks that are 10 months and older whereas saddle grafts can be used with seedlings 4-5 months.  Another site says cleft is more useful for top working and rootstock/branch can be 1-4 inches in dieameter while the scion should be no more than 1/4".  Saddle grafts up to 1" and states that both rootstock and scions should be the same diameter.  Most, if not all, grafted mangosteens I've seen in Thailand were saddle grafts.

thanks for the info Jay!

I guess that is why they depicted a mangosteen being saddle grafted in Bill Whitman's book!

I've read it's not advisable to defoliate mangosteen scions (but I wonder if people graft them this way regardless?)

Thanks for posting, Adam.  I had some excess intermedias around & for some reason, I hadn't even thought of using them for rootstocks.

the grafts are starting to push through the tape already (much faster than I anticipated)

I will try to post some pics as updates.

it doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet, but it's definitely a good sign.
