You can order the Tina 683d grafting knife on line. Take the screws out and you have two grafting/ knives. Good German carbon steel that takes a razor edge with just a few strokes on a stone.

Citrus General Discussion / Root hormone
« on: June 18, 2019, 12:28:57 PM »
I use Clonex. Is there something better? Is there a rooting hormone just for citrus. Many years ago when I could not afford to buy rooting hormone I made my own by boiling willow bark and limbs. Worked I guess. I started lots of cuttings with it. As long as you have the right acid l guess it matters not.

Citrus General Discussion / Budwood overage
« on: June 17, 2019, 04:42:04 PM »
Early Feb. This year I had the opportunity to cut budwood from a 15 year old white grapefruit. It bears tons of fruit each year with no cold protection besides being on the South side of the house. I cut 12 good budsticks from it and refrigerated them. Alas when April rolled around I was out of rootstock. So I got out the hormone, cut and install them in rooting tub. They all took off and are growing well. Since grapefruit does not do well on its own roots I have decided to use the cuttings for buds and chip grafting this fall. Since they came from the top of a good bearing tree I see no drawbacks (bearing timewise) or other drawbacks for doing this. I have done it with satsumas and poncirus with success. Any opionions? Share your thoughts.

Citrus General Discussion / Ebay & etsy seed
« on: June 07, 2019, 10:27:08 AM »
After several conversations with ebay & etsy seed sellers  it is evident that they do not know the difference between standard poncirus and the flying dragon cultivar. Better have a conversation and get pics before you order. I ordered a quart from Lyn citrus (they know the diffetence) but they are out.

Citrus General Discussion / More strange stuff
« on: June 03, 2019, 09:00:51 PM »
Fall 2018 I found in a grove of poncirus one limb on a large tree that had one fruit on it. The fruit was twice as large as poncirus usually is. I packed it home and ripped out the seed. It had exactly 24 seed in it. Put them in a zip lock in refrigerator. Decided to plant them a week later and did. Only on seed germinated. It has been a while but it finally has leaves..but they are not poncirus leaves. They are tri lobed but very large, not glossy. I do not know what it is nut it is not poncirus. It looks like Troyer. There are no citrus deep in the woods where this was. Dont see any way bloom could have been compromised. Too bad only one seed survived. Gonna see if I can grow it. Any iddas  ever seen this?????? Pics to follow

Citrus General Discussion / Poncirus
« on: May 19, 2019, 08:59:02 PM »
In the woods this weekend I came upon a grove of poncirus. I spent some time looking for variations/mutations. Nothing of real intetest except part of the grove had large fruit. I know that this is an indication that these bloomed early. They were about six feet tall. I could not stand it...got my shovel out and dug up 4 of them, burlaped the roots and hauled them to the truck. Went home potted them in 25 gallon pots, fertilized and sprayed them good. Watered them down. The fruit will probably fall due to transplant shock but next year I should be flush with seed. I am certain that I have a problem....can not stand to leave it in the woods......

Citrus General Discussion / Bad news
« on: May 15, 2019, 09:08:08 PM »
I had to have some help grafting this year. I hired a highly recommended fellow. He grafted a 50 foot row of in ground poncirus. In looking at the buds and the absence of new growth, it appears that he used blind buds. The budwork is good. Buds are green and they took. Any way to save this row? Besides...if you want a job done well...do it yourself.

For those interested, budwood can be ordered from lyncitrusseed. You must state that it is for home citrus production and you must order 200 buds.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Mix

What I use is: 3 teaspoons Spinosid, 2 teaspoons Malithion, 3 teaspoons of Neem Oil extract to one gallon of water. I spray after rains and about every 20 days unless I see pest or damage.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Any opinions.....
« on: May 05, 2019, 08:40:50 PM »
I have a bench in front of my house that I place citrus on for folks to take. I put a sheet with care and planting instructions in each pot. I do not take money for the citrus but I list parafilm and other grafting stuff that I will take as a donation. Today someone dropped off a 5 gallon bucket of standard poncirus, bare root w/water in bottom. They were all just under pencil size and about 2 feet tall. So..having budwood, I got in the shade of my liveoak..on my bench and budded each one, potted, fertilized, watered and sprayed each one with my mixture of neem oil extract. Left them in the shade. Never grafted like this before. Sure a lot easier than grafting in ground rootstock or potted rootstock. Im old and it hurts to get down low. Gonna see what happens.

I usually get my grafting stuff from A Len. But since I do not sell trees anymore they have become very costly. Post a better/less expensive supplier if you know one.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Poncirus seed
« on: April 26, 2019, 05:33:23 PM »
Upon my return to Louisiana, I immediately went to my favorite grove of poncirus. The grove had tripled in size. I noticed that some had fruit on them while most were blossoming. I saw some veriations too. I marked the ones with fruit as I intended to get me some of them seed. Also marked a tree with tiny thorns. Upon my return in November the deer had made shambles of the grove. I guess they ate the flagging tape I used to mark trees. Fruit was all on the ground and mostly crushed. I did not know deer would do that. I got no seed because I did not know what tree it came from
I ordered seed this year. This Nov. I intend to be on the spot.
