"Super Sweet C" Pineapple
« on: June 29, 2018, 09:49:03 AM »
Greetings fellow fruit lovers! Can anyone assist me with ANY information on a variety of pineapple I just received from Hidden Acres Nursery. I have no idea of the size, color or flavor of it. If anyone can report on this I truly tropically appreciate it!!!

I never heard of this pineapple. I think the only way to find out any info is to ask the seller. How did you order from them?

Got it at a local nursery called Lukas. They had a table upfront with them. I got one that had a fruit growing already so I will update you if I can get the fruit to mature and ripen (fingers crossed). I like the fact that it does not have the spiney edged leaves on it making it safer or easier to plant in bunches. I called the Nursery that originally sells them and they simply stated that it was edible and a new variety and that was about it. I guess not much on it either, kind of bummed about that.

Please describe the type of refractometer you have and how you did the testing.  I have had a number of the Kauai White Sugarloaf, including some in February of this year where they were not as sweet as those from summer months.  While I never tested them (I really could care less what a meter shows, its about actual taste),  that number seems a but high.

All there own, this is a older picture of the Brix of the Kaui Sugarloaf from Hawaii and not the other Sugarloafs

Sugarloaf is another hybrid that was imported but the kaui sugarloaf has no spines vs other has spines, also kaui was the better of 2

No, not really.  The Kauai Sugarloaf pineapples that people order exclusively from Kauai Sugarloaf company are grown in Kauai and coined "Kauai White Sugarloaf" as such.  Whether they are a different subspecies of Sugarloaf or the same as those for sale in Florida that come from agristarts cultures (also known as Kona Sugarloaf) but just taste different due to the terroir I guess could be debated.

Family J, are you saying the Kauai Sugarloaf has no spines on the plant and the Kona Sugarloaf does?  I just want to clarify.  I pulled all my Kona Sugarloafs because the spines where ripping me apart.

The top left is the Kaui Sugarloaf top from the brix shown and there is no spines on it. the other kind of sugarloaf has the spines and that hurt

Went to Luka's nursery today and bought the 'Super Sweet C' pineapple plant with little fruit on it. Looks like the fruit will not develop a full size but we'll see,  maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks both of you for confirming they are spineless. Now I need to get some!
