India (Indra, Indera?) Mango, I like it a lot
« on: July 30, 2014, 05:23:47 PM »
I'm a big fan of carrie mangoes, and recently got to taste Indera (?) this mango was quite large, and reminded me of a carrie...but less mushy, and a nice tart flavor.....still very sweet, with the whole tropical suntan lotion smell/taste...it reminds me of coconut, mango, and about 2 other fruits, all rolled into one.

anyone have experience with this variety?  (did I get the name right?)

where did you get it?

Zill's had them for sale, it also had a numbered name as well, I can't remember.

it's a really good, large carrie-like mango.

man...nobody heard of it?

maybe I have the name wrong?

I guess it was an off the beaten path variety...I asked if they had a tree available for sale, they said no...I guess they don't propagate that one....whatever it is.

if you are a carrie lover, make your way to zills and taste this mango (I think it's called Indera, or something close)...looks like a larger, slightly rounder carrie mango....you won't be disappointed.

I don't specifically recall it but I checked Gary's list, India's number is 36-8 and it is a Zill 80 seedling.

Zill 80 is a seedling from Kent.   I would describe it as a fruitier version of Kent.  Fruit Punch is also a seedling of Zill 80.

tried to call, but maybe it was too early (930am)...then I forgot to call back....I gotta figure out the if the name Indera is right. dam it's hard to keep up with all these frickin' names.

here is a pic of the fruit...maybe we can rule out Indian mango in the meantime?

the fruit gets decent sized...gotta eat them when soft and greenish, like carrie.

I think I like this one better than carrie, because of the firmer flesh, and larger size fruits....and exceptional flavor...(does have some resin, but nice!)

A lot of feral Indian mangoes here in Brisbane Saff. Those look a little too rounded. My experience of the Indian types is that they are more elongated.

starling,
sorry i confused you...i made a mistake...the fruit is called "India"

I wasn't referring to the race of indian mangoes, but I'm guessing India is probably an indian type mango?

any how, I'm doubting it's the one bsbullie called India, cuz it doesn't remind me of kent at all..like I said, its lot like carrie.

There's no reason why it would look like a Kent.   IF its the India,  it was a seedling of Zill 80.  The shape of what you have is similar to the shape of Fruit Punch,  also a seedling of Zill 80.

I will see what I can find out too.

Oh, man.  Just saw this post and I passed on several "india" mangoes at the mango festival...seemed too generic of a name, but I didn't know it was from zills....will have to try that one next year!

Maybe they changed the name, but they call it 'Indra' this year. Which is the original name Adam referred to in the first post.

so the name is Indra?  not Indera?

if so I need to edit the title of this thread to avoid more confusion.
(definitely not India)

I do think there is a name confusion issue.  I have a list put together by Gary and Marlys and whil ethe writing may be tough to determine, it sure looks like it was "India" and as Sheehan stated, its number is 36-8.  The mango (fruit perople, not tree) that ZHPP was selling had "Indra" associated with it (I believe it was being pronounced "Indeera").

maybe someone wrote an 'i' that looked like an 'r', when writing the name India?

I don't know anything about the specific mango in question, but figured I should mention -- Indra is a common Indian name (as is Indira).

no I hadn't thought of her because the spelling was different, we never mentioned that name.

but now that you reminded me, the Gray streak in her hair was breathtaking.
