Congrats Luc! Never tasted Marang but have only heard good things.

There is a grower in Bokeelia FL with some nice Marang trees. Not sure if they fruited yet but they were healthy good size trees in ground.

Yeah I remembered Oscar had previously mentioned a caterpillar in Hawaii that attacked garcinia leaves and Cos lives in Hawaii. Maybe go outside with flashlight at night time and see if you can catch a caterpillar in the act?

481
Tomas will have to comment on taste vs Achachairu. I have only heard it is pleasant and sweeter than the other variety of g. madruno. Maybe Tropicalfruithunter has also tried it on one of his trips to PR?

482
Tomas since you are the only one who has tried this sweet variety, how would you compare it to Achachairu?  Or any other Garcinia for that matter. I'm trying to get some feeling for the quality of this fruit.

Thanks
Bill

Have you tasted Achachairu? The madrono sweet is going to have less flesh to seed ratio, and smaller overall fruit size. Achachairu likely also more hardy. I don't think anybody will plant 10,000 madrono in Oz

I've noticed some seedlings pop out like that but end up growing new foliage out of those "dead" ends of the branches. Don't worry too much right now. It should be fine. Keep a look out for caterpillar that likes to eat foliage.

484
G. intermedia comes out with red new growth. Then it turns more of that yellowish green you see. Then it turns more green as the leaf ages.

485
I agree Adam, looks more like intermedia. Grernman, let us know how it does for you in New Orleans area.

Yeah TTs pics don't match up with species in most of their garcinia species profiles. Better off ordering seeds from reliable source and growing those.

Greenman, if you want madrono I believe Adam (flyingfoxfruits) said he had one for sale. Might want to check with him to see if he still has it.

486
i had just bought a plant from Top-Trops
it was on sale for $5 at the time.

what is the cold tolerance ?
i thought i had remembered reading it could handle light frosts or, upper 20s ?

http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Rheedia_madruno

and does anyone know if G.  macrophylla or G. brasiliensis are at all hardy ?

Hard to say what you got from TT. Their labeling can be... unreliable at times?

I was surprised many people didn't know about this fruit. The fruit is excellent.  Some people called it giant passion fruit.

Barath, thank for the input.

Jack, pollen of P. alata works for sure.  That's why we have passiflora quadrangularis hybrid (P.  decaisneana).  Did you use pollen of P. caerulea on P. quadrangularis?  I tried but it failed.  Anyway, I succeeded the pollination by using its own pollen.

Hoang,

I believe it's also called Giant Granadilla

488
I'm no expert but I believe that most people think his tree is a strain of Garcina Acuminata.

Bill

Sadhu calls the sweet and regular madrono as Garcinia (rheedia) madruno.

Bacurizinho he calls Garcinia acuminata. From reports of growers, these are more cold sensitive than Achachairu.

489
Mine are taller than they are wide. They end up pyramidal shape. Longest branches from bottom up

490
My two biggest ones are 6ft and 4.5ft. They grow fast for a Garcinia. Haven't really seen them stop growing. Seems they grow faster wide than they do tall. Also seems like once they get past a few years they start to take off with faster growth. Full sun in Lee County FL. Fingers crossed for fruit within a few years..

That's why I said there wasn't a cacao tree that started a controversy.  ;)  There was a forum member though.

Look forward to your pics. Keep it protected if/when you need to and give it your best shot! Good luck

Congrats Tropical AL! They do look rather slender and young

Now I have squirrels feasting on the mangos. There is not a fruit in my yard that the critters haven't eaten since the demised of my cat. I took Jeff's asvice and stringed up some Just One Bite 2 on all mango trees

Yes here is a couple more pictures.  Isn't achachairu pointed at one end?

Bill

I believe Achachairu has multiple selections or cultivars. Could be any one of them?

I've heard nothing but good things about the taste of Achachairu. @BestDay, I've heard one tree alone can produce hundreds of fruit each year after getting some fruiting years under its belt.

They finished on my tree 4-5 weeks ago.

Gnappi, I ended up purchasing a ~6 year old tree from a generous member of this forum. It was mostly in shade it's whole life, had a few fruit developing. I put it out in partial sun in a big container and it took off. The tree is still going. Maybe 50 fruit developing still green and still continuous flowering and new growth coming out red.
