Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: SoCal Tropical Storm Watch

Believe it or not, I got over 6" of rain at my house, measure with a pot and camping cooler box. The 4" tall pot was over filled and the cooler measure near 9" but since there is a hump around the drain spigot so it's less than 8".  Weather predicted 20mph wind but we got less than 10 luckily. The pot and cooler were out in the open area.

Pruning and thinning branches may / would help saving vulnerable trees ahead of this storm path.

Ouch! I hope Johnny will not lose any mango fruits as these ST look so good. I only have a few fruits this year and tomorrow I will try to anchor each fruit to the holding branch and hope the wind doesn't knock them down.

Here’s another graft that took using that method 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

This is a Sugarloaf grafted onto my Orange Sherbet mango tree!

Great video!!!
Try to align at least one side of the scion to the rootstock if they are different in size, instead of aligning them center.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee Taste Comparison
« on: August 18, 2023, 12:14:01 AM »
My Emperor are large and pretty but it's okay in tastes. It's the least sweetest of any lychee I have had unfortunately.  I hear it's suppose to be much tastier but I don't know. I have removed a lot of older trees around it this year and see if more sunlight does it any better.

I have not tasted Kaimana. I've only tasted Brewster, Mauritius, and Sweetheart to compare.

Hey Eggo,
Is this tree growing from seed? I remember it was not in a full sun spot so its taste might not be the best it can be. The fruits are so large next to the golf ball.

In my opinion, the key to better public acceptance of organic fruits is through awareness/education. This is why I like going to small sellers because I get a chance to talk and learn from these sellers.

Most people only learned about selecting produces or fruits from TV ads which only show shiny waxy perfect looking fruits.
Yes, they need more education in foods that a corn ear with a worm is not a bad corn.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sweet Tart Mango Tree Producing in SoCal

My Sweet Tart mangoes are starting to crack.  I think I overwatered.  These are from a Sweet Tart mango seed I planted in 2018.
Does it have developed seed in there? Fake seed tends to cause crack.

I hate to discard any healthy vigorous seedlings, so why not plant them all in pots and wait. Some will die and you might ended up with a single tree, true to LZ or not but a good tree, then if the fruits are not good then topwork and graft something on.

My young Sweet Tart tree seems to be producing well this year. Walking around the tree I count 40+ fruit egg size or larger. Hopefully, most of them will hold until maturity.

when were the flower bloom? Location in Fountain valley OC? I'm in Burbank and my ST doing well consider it's a small graft branch about thumb size and holding 3 fruits -- 2 about pingpong size and one is tennis ball size. The flowers were in late May and covered with PM but somehow it holds 3 fruits.

Lemon Zest big tree with tons of beautiful handsome flowers but ended up zero fruits, and I mean none :( I will force the flowers not later than April to avoid PM during June glooming in our area.

Btw, Sweet tart tastes excellent and I think it's better than LZ (a bit chalky)

This is a bad year of mango fruits for me: all the trees are doing great but not much fruits  :(
LZ: so much flowers but zero fruits.
ST Maui: normally a reliable fruiting variety, but all small fruits fell off.
Okrung: many fruitlets but cracked because there is no seed
Peach cobbler: normally very reliable and held about 30 fruits, this year it had only 10 and all fell off at about thumb size. It sent out summer flowers but no fruits. It seems the three is in growing reason and so it aborted the fruits, or it's too warm for flowers to develop to fruits.

Here are the trees with no fruits:
(FL people think we are crazy to have mango trees inches next to the house :))
LZ on the top high and Okrung on the left and lower -- both are grafts on one HD Lavern rootstock:

Peach cobbler on the right and left side: Okrung, maha, ST Maui on Glenn rootstock:

Providing an update on my Venus (under different screen name, got locked out my previous & unable to restore.  Ended up getting 1/3 success on my first grafting attempt.  2 years later, I have fruit on my Orange Essence scion grafted to my Venus  ;D

Congrats!!!

I would cut off the dead (or still alive) part of the rootstock above the graft, as the dead root will root and infect the graft.

Success on 2/3 grave coffins.  EXCELLENT results considering was my first time grafting.  It was about 6-7 weeks but I'm very happy they took!
At this stage, I would cut off the branch above the graft so the rootstock only push the new shoots from the scion.
These grafts took longer time to push new shoots because OP left too much leaves and nodes above the graft. I would cut off the branch above the lowest leaf to force the rootstock to push new shoots from the scion.

12
I used this technique today on my Venus, and hoping the grafts took, although I'm not sure.  Did my best to get some pics,

I don't see you cut off the top of branches above the grafts. I would cut off the top before digging the graves. I also think the graves are a little too wide for the coffins. When they are matched the grave two side barks will heal to the scion faster.
It seems you successfully had a few survived grafts. Congrads!!!

On the rubber bands. I won't worry sap restriction in the first month. I would not touch/disturb the rubber band or tape for fear of dislodge the tender scion; wait until after the new shoots about 6" long then remove the rubber bands and redo the taping to support the graft from wind breakage.

Cleft may be the most dummy proof.  In my opinion,  the "coffin" graft is a poor method (and has nothing to do with nor any resemblance to a graft by Walter Zill).  I am not sure why you would have stripped the scion.  Cant see anything hood to come of that.

If done right, side veneer is a fast take and makes for a good graft union.
Correct that Cleft is the sure way but what if the rootstock branch is much larger than the scion? This is why Walter Zill shown his graft of cuttings on a larger branches. However, as amatuers gardeners I and others can't tell how to cut the bark flat down to the cambium -- not too deep into the wood and not enough -- and so by pulling off the bark it's a sure way to get to the cambium 100% sure as in the "coffin" method.

sapote, what type of fruit tree were you grafting that takes 2yrs for scion to bud out? Just curious.
Sorry for the late response on this. It was the Edward cutting grafted on the Glenn rootstock. In fact I just went out at 9PM  to see if the now 5 years old graft still alive and if any shootings came out: none and the cutting now is flat bended in with the rootstock bark. pic below.
The reason this 5 yrs old graft never send out any shoots because I have another graft above (graft at the same time) with shooting sent out early and it took all the energy from the branch and so this lower graft has been in dormant for 5 yrs and counting.

Valencia Pride holding a good amount of mangoes getting finger size. Last year only harvested 4 hoping to double it this year. Have a few panicles on it right now so maybe a late season hold.

Are these trees grafted from FL? They look so lanky. Growing mangoes from seeds is a sure and fast way in SoCal.

flesh is whiter that ivory and the flavor is sweet honey (really though not like that one knock off called raw honey🙈), zero fibers, and creamy.

The description is close to Iman Pasand, but you would have said it has India mango aroma.

wow, more than 3 months since I reported of the flower panicles on the trees, and now here they are still with flower buds not open yet. The cold weather slow down the flower development, I think. So far no bad sign of PM yet. I hope the buds will fully open for the bees in March and it should be warmer by then. I also think we only have the best wind from March to early May, before the marine layer moving in causing morning dews in warm weather and it a good recipe for PM. Took this pic this morning on LZ + O-krung tong grafted on HD mexican rootstock:

This patch of flowers became black and fell off. Then a 2nd patch happened in late March/early April but had major PM, so I picked them off (a mistake I think). Then 3rd patch of flowers came in May then hit by SoCal June gloom. None of LZ have any fruits this year, but other varieties hold decent fruits.
I believe that I made the mistake of removing all flowers of the 2nd patch which might be ok to have some LZ fruits. Flowering in June in SoCal is not good.

How are your SoCal mango this season?

Btw, in the pic the top branches are LZ and the lower branches near the mosaic table are Okrung which hold decent fruits while the bigger and taller LZ have none this year :(

Never heard of All Summer mango. Sounds like a gimmick market variety to me.

I found some more of my photos from last year, here's the Younghan's Gold fruit shape.

The last few photos show the fruit a bit over ripe. Do you pick them hard, or just gave when squeezed? Sapote never ripe properly when picked hard, this makes sapote fruits hard to distribute/transport as the only good tasting fruits are ones that picked perfect pipe on the tree, or a fruit bomb mess on the ground couple days later.

sapote,

I had to move my largest of the seedling McDill tree, it was over 18ft each year and I trim the tops back to 12 ft. It was a very healthy tree with 34 different varieties on it.

I never thought one could love sapote this much -- 34 varieties grafted on one tree!!!

I chop and dug up my favorite Suebelle as the tree got too big and making too many fruit bomb mess on the patio pavers.

None of the coon ever come back around here, after getting a dose of 4500V from the e-fly swatter.

Coconut Cream seedling seed seems monoembryonic.

You need to peel off that thin brow skin to see if it's popy or mono based on the look of the white "brain" structure.

It is sweet, soft and juicy, with 2 or 4 large and small seeds, not sure what variety this is, it bears even more fruits this year...

Good variety I think. Could Suebelle which can have yellow to orange flesh and excellent taste.

These photos are from 2021 when I had my large tree, now that tree is gone.

What happened to the tree -- chopped and dug up?
This variety doesn't taste that good. Any bitterness in the taste?

I learned that bud graft or veneer graft is not a good choice for some varieties, which grow faster when cleft graft was used.
