« on: December 22, 2014, 11:48:04 PM »
I made this today since I was on the roof putting up lights and decided I should go ahead and make a little video, (haha 16 minutes) and put on youtube. I didn't really edit it, later I will add some captions.

Anyone else growing this or tried it? I grow mine a few miles from the coast in southern California and it doesn't get too hot and the fruit is real good.

My friend brought back some seeds from Costa Rica and couldn't remember what they were from. Any ideas on the three? They were from fruit that she ate.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / California grown Lemon Zest Mango
« on: August 01, 2014, 01:00:51 AM »
I was just checking some of my mangos in containers and saw this beauty. Not really big, but the color looks awesome. It is slightly soft, and was wondering when is the LZ at it's peak?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Huge Cherimoya leaves
« on: July 31, 2014, 01:36:22 AM »
Images of a seedling cherimoya leaf, I believe it is a "lucida". I couldn't believe the size of this thing. I guess I'll try and grow the tree to maturity.

My little red custard apples are starting to ripen up this year. They are small but pretty tasty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia Smithii?
« on: May 28, 2014, 08:31:58 PM »
So, I was at Jim Neitzels and he showed me a plant he bought many years ago at a local nursery only labeled as Smithii. The leaves are a lot larger than the uniflora, and the fruit when ripe is orange, it doesn't have any nasty after taste if eaten ripe.

Has anyone seen this type of Eugenia, I don't recall seeing a Eugenia Smithii listed anywhere, so I'd like to know if it is just maybe a different Uniflora cultivar or another Eugenia I'm not familiar with

I was just reading the other post on the guy that had problems with a seed purchase. And wanted to bring up a problem with Helton. I have a Brasilian cousin that lives in Sao Paulo and I sent her $200 to buy seeds from Helton. She even went to his place and took photos of the seeds. I had her sister hand carry the seeds with a permit back to the states and send me the package from another state. I opened the package and discovered that only one bag of seeds were in the package. I asked my cousins if they had opened anything and they said no, they are both young women that don't know much about seeds, my cousin also did not have the seeds confiscated at the airport, in fact she works for an airline and would never try and illegally bring seeds back. I asked my cousin in Sao Paulo to contact Helton and ask what happened to the seeds. He hasn't responded and I'm afraid I'm out $200. If anyone knows him personally can you ask him if he recalls the transaction and have him message me on the board. This took place back in September. My cousins name is Joice.
Here are the photos she took of seeds at Helton's place.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First fruit of the New Year a Sugar Apple?
« on: January 01, 2014, 02:38:11 PM »
Went out to check on trees this morning and went to see how my sugar apple was doing and the largest fruit on it was soft. We don't get too many down here, but since it's been a mild winter this one ripened up ok. It tasted good also, not as sweet as all the cherimoyas we've been getting, but had a nice flavor.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / looking for Garcinia Indica
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:16:27 AM »
Checking to see if anyone has seeds of this and what are some of it's characteristics, the leaves seem like they could handle the some southern California climate. Also interested in the taste, it looks nice.

Thanks,  Mark

Late evening while checking some of my plants, I was looking at my M. glazioviana (Cabeluda) and checking to see if I wanted to prune some low hanging branches, and to my surprise found two fruit under the tree. It flowered heavily earlier in the year, and I thought no fruit had set. I've tasted the fruit on the big island in April a few years ago, and they were ok. The piece I ate this morning was just like a sweet apricot coconut taste, the seed was large and not much flesh.
Has anyone else in California had any luck fruiting this?
Also, had a Makok sapodilla fall off the tree, I think it was a bit early, I let it soften up and ate it this morning, the seed was not mature, so I suspect the fruit fell early, but it only took a night on the counter to ripen up.

Mod edit: pics weren't working properly.

Hoping that all of the trees that flowered recently will hold their fruit. This is the first year the Pitomba, has flowered, not sure if it will develop some fruit. The Imbe seems to be holding fruit for the first time, There are 2 males in the ground and one female still in a pot, I grafted males onto the female and females onto the  males. Also have fruit developing on the Pickering, Heidi, Corriente, Kensington Pride, Sweet Tart, NDM, Coconut Cream, Harvest Moon,  Cogshall, Okrung, Neelam, Jakarta, Alfonso, and Lemon Zest mangos. A single fruit on the San Pedro Custard Apple held over the winter but not sure if the cold stunted the fruit development. Fruit on the Makok, Alano and Ox sapodillas have done fine, through the winter. The Sweetheart, Brewster and Emperor lychees are holding fruit. Also the Wampee is flowering real nice. The red smooth skin Suriname Cherry is out of control, it has had fruit full time for 2 1/2 years straight.
The only problem I have had with certain trees is we don't get any real heat here near the ocean, never any frost just that cool onshore maritime flow. My jackfruits are fine through the winters, but grow real slow. I've had a Mamey in the ground for a few years and it has flowered but has yet to set fruit and just recently lost about 3 feet off the top, also a biribia that set fruit only to drop it around November. I had fruit mature on a Kampong Mauve Sugar apple, the coffee produces fine each year, the bananas are always fruiting, dragon fruit do great, starfruit has been a little shy to hold fruit, but the tree is still young. I also have one of those Manila or Christmas palms I started from a seed I brought back from Malasia that has been growing outside for 6 years. Also I planted one of the seeds of the Royal palms from the Rio botanical gardens that I picked up. And also the Fijian fan palms are doing fine with no protection. I have had a canistel in the ground for a while, but it I think it needs some more heat to start producing, it goes dormant and sheds leaves every spring and doesn't seem to take off. I also had a Ross sapote that didn't make it in the ground, it lasted a few years and slowly croaked. Probably need to find the little microclimates and plant accordinly. I'm excited to see if my Garcinia vleerackerii makes it here. Does anyone else with a similar climate have any success or failures they can share?

Anyway, here are some of the photos, the quality isn't too good, taken with phone camera.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / African Breadfruit climate conditions
« on: June 16, 2013, 12:57:11 PM »
I just got a 4 foot African Breadfruit (Treculia africana) and I know Oscar said he also has one. I was wondering what kind of cold tolerance this tree has, also how long it takes to flower and fruit. Supposedly it grows in Angola and other parts of sub-tropical Africa and at an altitude up to 1300 meters.

Thanks,

Mark

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical fruit finds in Ottawa
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:07:29 PM »
I was in Canada over the weekend and went through China town, and picked up these real nice treats. The green lychees were exceptionally tasty, some of the best I've had. The mangosteens were all great, and the langsats had one or 2 seeds in the whole bunch. There were also sugar apples, dragon fruit, and some type of atemoya. I also picked up a few Haitian mangos, which I assume were Madam Francis, the one I have pictured is a green asian. There were also Palmer, Ataulfo, and Hadens.

Anyway, I have read that the fruit is not irradiated that is imported into Canada, can anyone confirm this?

Hey,

Will be in Belize for a week or so at the end of the month. Does anyone know of what is fruiting at that time, and any nurseries or contacts for plant material.

Thanks, Mark

Looking for the seeds or scions.

I will be in Orlando from Saturday until Monday. I am looking for any places to pick up some legal items to take back. Does anyone have any ideas as to nurseries etc within about 50-100 miles or so? Looking for A. reticulta that hasn't budded out yet, or any other unusual annonas for California that maybe pushing growth now.. I am open to anything that I don't have here or can't easily get here.

Thanks, Mark

If anyone has any leads just email or PM me.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,
Looking for some lychee varieties that produce very large fruit, size of chicken and goose eggs. I just can't make it to the special provinces in China to get some airlayers.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unknown Eugenia
« on: December 25, 2012, 01:26:46 PM »
I thought this was Uvalha, but Leroy which has the "Leroy" sapote out here in California calls it skunk fruit. It really stinks when it gets soft. I have a large one in a 25 gal. and gave one to Steve at Exoctica. Mine hasn't flowered yet. So if anyone can tell me exactly what it is I would appreciate it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / California sub-tropical garden photos

Here are a few of my plants that have been doing pretty good through our winters, except for the Cacao which I bring in on colder nights. I have about 12 different mangos, a nice Kampong Mauve with 3 decent fruits. Also, more plants and trees then I have room for.
December 2012

"Golden Nugget" Jackfruit. This one I believe is pretty cold hardy. The Mai 2 next to it bit the dust last winter.

"Brewster" Lychee

Everbearing Suriname cherry, non stop for a year and a half.

Yellow Jaboticaba

"Biew Kiew" Longan

Pair of Imbes. One grew like a vine, and the other just spread out low. Have had flowers but no set, I have another one in a pot that I think is female. Has anyone grafted a female over to a male?

"Alano" Sapodilla. I bought this from "Frankies" in Hawaii in 2007, it was just a 1 foot tall graft when I brought it over. Once in the ground it has taken off.

Pitomba

Red Custard Apple, this tree has a lot of flowers and a few small fruit have recently set.

Green Sapote "Makawao"

"Red Lady" Papaya

Red Jaboticaba

"Paulista" Jaboticaba

Santol, this has been outside all year round for 2 winters and has never had any problems. Maybe some fruit one day.

"Farwell Ranch" Lychee that won't grow tall, but spreads a bit.

April 2014
Here are some of the same trees after a year and 3 months. Some have been pruned to get more light to the inside.

"Alano" Sapodilla

Imbes

"Pickering"

"Makawao" Green Sapote

"Everbearing" Pitanga

"Biew Kiew" Longan
