« on: May 21, 2012, 12:36:02 AM »
we'll start with my pride and joy- my sweetheart lychee tree. one of the fruit has reached full size and is just starting to color up.

\

next my Maha Chanok- dont think the fruit has grown much bigger in the last few weeks-

my PSM mango, finally about to bust out a new growth spurt after about a year of doing zilch (its the recipient of my lychee peels and stones

two lychee airlayers from harry- variety unknown but possibly garnet and kaimana - at the beginning of nice growth spurts

business is so good, i'm expanding!
kidding- because i pack so many trees into my tiny yard, i get very little sun on my patio so i have put 3 of my containered tropicals on the side of the street.

golden transparent plum

kilomoka kiwi

fantasia nectarine ( the squirrels get most of these every year

delicious black raspberry

delicious red gooseberry

fig airlayer

golden muscat grape- really tasty but a little seedy

cherries now netted

nectacrest nectraine

mirabelle plums grafted onto golden transparent plum

cox apples under nylon footies

pommegranates

Amazing accomplishment LL! Why do you have to wrap the mango?

Lycheeluva, thanks for sharing all the photos. Especially interested to find out how that kilomoka kiwi tastes? Curious--how much time do you spend on your garden on average?
Just picked my first Brewsters off my trees. Incredible tasting, way better than anything i've bought so far! But they are WAY up there.

Oscar, from April through October I usually spend between 30 minutes and several hours every Sunday. And then a few minutes here and there whenever I can find the time. Unfortunately, being a lawyer, having 4 kids, and not doing any weekday activities on Saturday (in observance of Sabbath) leaves me with barely any time to work in the garden.

Gerry:

Thanks for the pictorial update.  Your lychee crop is larger than mine.  Impressive work.  Based on my observations.....I think you are understating your time spent in the garden.  You must not be sleeping at night.....rather, instead out in the garden wrapping, etc.  until all hours.  In any case, everything looks great.

The 1-1-1? I'm scare of doing it on my mango, I think it's too old and well established.

Gooseberries are delicious and somewhat unusual. You have your priorities right!

You must be a lot faster worker than me! Your garden looks very well tended. I don't know how you could do all that just on short time on Sundays?

Gooseberries are delicious and somewhat unusual. You have your priorities right!

I agree been trying to get them to fruit reliably in SoCal, unfortunately fruit production is sporadic due to chill hours. There are low chill gooseberries out there, there is a wild ribes (believe its a gooseberry) that grows in SoCal.

Lychee,

Btw, did you mean Red Silk as the pomegranate variety?
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Gerry, I will add my congrats.  Do you do anything to the nectarines?  I planted a nectarine a couple of years ago and it is covered in small fruit.  I'm not necessarily organic, just lazy, so I am going to try to go without any sprays or netting and see what I get.

Doc, here in the north east, it is essential i use kocide (a copper powder) for peach curl. I also use trigizaride (thats prob not the right spelling). i also spray surround (a wettable clay powder that acts as a barrier against bugs) and i cover some of the fruit in nylon footies (also to protect against bugs).
if i did nothing, i would probably lose 100% of fruit to bugs and fungal disease

Awesome LL..Great job...what a wonderful assortment of fruits!! Definitely Congrats are in order.

Amazing accomplishment LL! Why do you have to wrap the mango?

I'm guessing you wrapped that Mango since you sometimes put the tree outside?

spot on Pug!.  i actually brought the mango tree outside for some fresh air and to water it with smelly fish fertilizer and to hopefully allow some bugs to pollinate some 2nd round mango blooms, so yeh, i stuck on organza bag so my good friends the squirrels did not get any bright ideas during the 12 hours or so the tree was outside.

Impressive collection, Lycheeluva.  No wonder the squirrels are so happy in your yard!

I'm jealous of your kiwi; I've tried growing hardy kiwi for 14 years here, but I've never had them hold fruit to maturity.  They always seem to bloom for me well before the last frost, which then knocks off all the fruit.

Nice updates Lycheeluva, about how many lychees are still holding onto your Sweetheart?  I can't believe how many fruiting tropicals/subtropicals you have growing in your climate.  Let us know how the Sweetheart, Maha Chanok and cherries taste!
