What mangoes do animals prefer and eat over others?
« on: July 05, 2015, 09:46:05 AM »
Do you see this too? Maybe it is an unknown plus for lemon zest?

In my backyard they will eat Glenn fruits but ignore lemon zest. NDM in back yard is rarely attacked. I guess they like Glenn the most. A Keitt back there also gets raided so in my backyard.....

  • Glenn yes
  • Keitt yes
  • Lemon Zest no
  • NDM no
  • Pickering  sometimes but not much

Maybe because it is really an Orange Sherbet? Just a guess.

I sure hope that was your attempt at a joke.  If not, all should know that there is a very distinct difference between Lemon Zest and Orange Sherbert,  in term of the tree's leaves, fruit shspe, fruit size,  fruit color, flesh color, flesh texture and fruit taste.

I've noticed something similar. Them rats would quicker find and damage a Julie or NDM that is semi ripe up in the tree than eat a tree ripened Maha that's been on the ground 2 days in a row. Maybe they're tastes are more sophisticated we think ;) :D.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

Just joking. If someone has the space they can try planting a Glenn tree next to lemon zest as a lure away from the LZ, the better mango

They are skipping that coca-cola taste for mangoes they find more delicious. Mango trees that my local wildlife like dine on..... yeah they will go for half ripe mangoes sometimes rather that ripe ones on another tree. You would think with their acute sense of smell they would always go for the ripe ones

I think that the squirrels around my place prefer to go after fruit still hanging on the tree. I think that the 'tree rats' must feel safer up there in the branches and leaves than down on the ground where they are exposed to predators. Some years we have a nest of Cooper's hawks set up in one of the oaks in our front yard. I've observed the hawks stalking squirrels -- sometimes with success. Maybe the squirrels' have passed on a kind of instinctual memory that danger lurks above.

I notice that when down on the ground the squrrels are always pausing, lifting their heads, looking nervously around. Up in the trees they seem less skittish and more focused on climbing around on the branches to reach the fruit.

For me it's been the blue Jays that have been a pain in the ass this season...they had a particular liking for Glenn and graham and left the other mangos alone for the most part.

The squirrels seem to enjoy mangoes that aren't very sour when unripe. They decimated my golden queen crop, which happens to be sugar sweet when green. They also seemed to enjoy Edgar. Not much damage on the LZ.

The favored mango of rodent and bird alike tends to be the carrie in my yard.

I bet the flying foxes and even rainbow Lorikeets here would decimate crops of them.

Maybe just maybe the LZ fruit grown in high ph Broward county soil like yours and mine does not get hit by animals. While LZ grown in neutral Palm Beach soil such as bsbullie and guanabanus have does get hit

For everyone---
Broward county can have mucky trending to acid soils like at Harry's place. While most of West Broward suburban developments were built on former Everglades. Developed via heavy machinery dredging up limestone laden soils to build drainage canals and heaping them (limestone/sand dredging debris) up on land that suburban style houses were built on.
If the natural original Everglades soil profile had somehow been kept intact, my soil would not be high ph

Rodents prefer "crispy", not mushy or sticky.

When immature they are all pretty "crispy".  I have seen squirrels do their share of gnawing on Carrie so I am not sure how that theory goes.  I have also seen them take a liking to Sweet Tart.

Cool thread! Hard to differentiate between racoon & squirrel damage since I never see the offender, but they are both around. Anyhow, in my yard, critters love Pickering & Cogshall, and will take them when not even close to ripe - I have to put plastic clamshells on them to keep any. They don't touch Manilita or Angies, neither of which I protect with clamshells.

In my yard the squirrels seem to most prefer Valencia Pride while the Blue Jays really go at the Angie. I suspect its mostly tree size and location. The Angie is all by itself on a isolated high spot with some palms near it and the VP is fairly large and planted near a fence that the rodents use as a squirrel highway.

I have my critters eating Tommy Atkins :o, macadamia nut, and the occasional Springfel.
The T/A's are left on the ground for an easy meal after they are damaged. The Springfel I cover with large black organza bags, I think it mutes the color change and when tied to the branch they never hit the ground. A critter trap is always baited but nothing has bothered with it for a while.
The nuts bloomed for about 2.5 months this year so there are never enough around to process at one time.
