cherimoya seeds black or brown?
« on: November 29, 2019, 06:04:26 AM »
I just ordered some cherimoya seeds for rootstock and when they came in I saw they are brown. I thought they would be black based on what I have seen online. They did come from a source in Florida so it makes me wonder if they are sugar apple seeds.  Thoughts?

I dont have any experience with cherimoya but with the other anonas i have grown the seeds turn brown when they dry out. I would just plant them out and see what grows. Once they have secondary leaves they should be easy to tell id it is a sugar apple or cherimoya.

Somme are brown and you can differentiate them from sugar apples because usually they are bigger and wider.
Also all sugar apple seeds i had were black while cherimoya were somme black and somme brown.
The seeds need to be real fresh from my experience.
I ordered cherimoya seeds from Ebay 6 times until i got just a single cherimoya seedling.
Same with sugar apples. There are verry dissapointing these annonaceae seeds.

They come out of the fruit black then dry to brown.  Its normal.

They dont need to be fresh either, 2 year old dry seeds all sprout for me.  They just need to be left in pots and not over watered.  It takes a month or so to sprout.

Yes, exactly true. I live in the area of Ecuador where cherimoya originates. We've got hundreds of them growing wild, all fruiting right now.
Seeds should be viable for quite a while. I got some seeds from another cherimoya variety in a different part of Ecuador. They were over a year old and sprouted without problem.

Perfectly fine.  You can soak the seeds until they sink, then plant them.  That softens the seed hulls.  But, it's not necessary

Put a sheet of paper towel over the seeds to pull them under water.

That's a good idea, although I still think most of these seeds are bad. I tried opening a few and they were almost hollow with some dark matter inside them...
