Seed Grafting
« on: May 22, 2013, 03:42:10 PM »
There is an interesting thread in the Citrus Growers Forum about grafting seeds onto a rootstock seedling, similar to budding.   It seems a practical method to help develop new varieties because it likely can force growth faster than growing the seed alone, and it's on a better rootstock that it's own.

A citrus forum member described the method:
"seeds are washed, seed coat is removed, longitudinal incision is made by the scalpel on cotyledons to insure the contact with rootstock.  The rest resembles bud grafting."

Technical Abstract:
"We have developed a technique for grafting citrus seeds to a citrus stock plant that allows the apparent development of a successful vascular connection between seed and stock plant and germination and development of a seedling which appears indistinguishable from seedlings germinated from seeds planted in soil. Cotyledons of grafted seeds turned green upon exposure to light. Seedling radicles emerged and grew downward, appressed to the trunk of the stock. The embryo emerged from between the cotyledons and successive pairs of true leaves emerged and expanded in a normal fashion. Possible applications of this novel seed grafting technology for breeding citrus and other fruit crops is discussed."

Seed grafting, inverted grafting, what's next? How about grafting a root onto a seed?  :o
What would be the advantage of seed grafting vs. regular budding for citrus?

Oscar, this technology is important primarily because it is amazingly new.  Let's remember that the computer was invented long before the internet.  If you've read the book "Guns, Germs and Steel" you will appreciate that technology usually precedes its ultimate use that benefits society.

That said, seed grafting does allow a hand-pollinated seed to benefit immediately from a more ideal rootstock and expedited growth versus growing on its own seed.

Are you going to try it out? I still don't get exactly how the seed is attached into the bud slit? If you try it please photo it.

The next time I bring seeds from the U.S. I'll give this a try and photo it.
