Sweet tart growth habit
« on: December 20, 2016, 10:28:24 PM »
Hey forum,

I'm curious about the personality of sweet tart, compact grower, tall lanky, wide spindly, etc can people please elaborate with pics and experience? I may have room for one more mango but I would probably have to squeeze it or swap spots with another.

Thanks,

-joep450

Tall, semi-vigorous.

I would say upright and vigorous.  It can be forced to branch of but the habit is still upright.

My ST grew upright but with a nice outward spread partly due to tip pruning. Not a super fast upright grower. My Kent was faster at this. Fernandin has been my fastest upright grower. Zero nitrogen for that one! Most out of control grafted known variety I have seen.

Sweet Tart-- upright but controllable/   Upright growers naturally branch out at a higher level than more compact mango trees. IOW their lowest prime branches may be 3-4 ft above the soil level after five years. I will take a better look outside.

This ST is about 8' tall. I tip pruned it after the first flush after planting, and it has branched out a little bit. Definitely a pretty upright grower so far. Juicy peach in the background.

Bought mine at the Brandon fruit tree sale in April, put it in the ground the next week, has grown about a foot since and thickened up in bushiness. Currently is about 5 feet tall. Thankfully the deer haven't messed with it being front of the yard.

Extremely delicious. ST and Lemon Zest are my two all time favorites.

Here is my Sweet Tart in a 25 gal. that I purchased last year in a 15 gal. from Rob. Growth is straight up but it's starting to get
a nice canopy due to the tipping I did throughout the year.

Well, if it's that high up on your list I guess I'll have to at least figure out where to get some to try or maybe a big one that will fruit in the pot.  I'm pretty much out of yard space. My wife informed me that I have 21 mango trees and still haven't even planted them all yet. It's impossible to find some of the new cultivators in Brevard/ Merritt island that are in the ground bearing fruit.

Visit the local Brevard Tropical Fruit club.  They have multiple sampling of many varieties of mangoes  at their monthly meetings and there are plenty of home growers in Brevard with many of the new cultivars that are at least 4 to 5 years old and producing.

It's semi vigorous upright grower and best of all super productive easy to grow. One of the best mango for three consecutive years here in California.

A lot of factors come into play, the biggest one your zone.  Even though we had the warmest Christmas in 20 years today  :( I am manipulating, controlling, my ST and LZ in various ways. Like I said in another post regarding dwarf mangos --> "Am shortening the internodes on my Lemon Zest and Sweet Tart via Bonzi (a PGR) apps and severe topping right after planting.  Lemon Zest has responded really well and it's super vigorous.  Topped it down to a stick this spring, right above the first node."

This is my ST a few days ago, grafted in late winter this year. I wrapped the new foliage to harden off (lignify) it into more of an upright shape.  It was very open.

My LZ is beautiful with 8 scaffold branches, 4' tall.  Here it is topped down to a stick this spring.  It was 5' tall when newly planted.

IOW, you're in control.  Gitter done.

That is a beautiful tree but for me way too lanky.  You'll be harvesting fruit 15' above the ground!  :D

This is a late response, but I really appreciate the responses on here, especially the pictures for emphasis. I see exactly now how this tree will behave and I have the perfect spot for it.

Wishing you all a healthy and fruitful new year,
