I’m attempting something as I’ve seen it done in the past with calamondins and various lemons, that these guys rapidly rooted cuttings. I just got my hands on a cheap “TurboKlone 24T” so I will try my luck with it for citrus, if not I do a lot of rare tomatoes I can still use it with.

Has anyone else ever rooted cuttings this way? I imagined it wouldn’t have ever worked being how prone to rot and shock citrus typically are, but I’ve seen at least a few times being very successful. I plan to try on some finger limes and various lemons.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Flying Dragon Fruiting requirements?
« on: May 28, 2021, 02:50:49 PM »
Hello all! I recently got a nice flying dragon with a few fruits on it for rootstock use later on. I know trifoliates are deciduous, do they require a “chill period” such as other deciduous trees do in order to fruit? Or do they just fruit according to photoperiod (such as day length and temp rises)? There’s not a whole lot of info out there! I attempted at some FD’s last year however they died in the cold, leaving them outside during the winter too long and I don’t want that to happen again! Thanks all.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / ISO Lemon cuttings
« on: March 23, 2021, 10:44:31 AM »
Just looking for any old lemon cuttings off of fruiting trees to root. Wanting to do something nice as a few gifts for people and just don’t have the capacity to take lemon cuttings from my tree yet. I do have quite a bit to trade:

Cuttings from -

Fukushu kumquat
Nordmann seedless
Australian Blood Lime
Murcott mandarin
Regular green finger lime

I have very few and could spare some from:

Red Finger lime
Rangpur lime
Variegated Navel Orange (-cara cara aka Tiger Navel)

Or I am willing to buy cuttings outright. Shipping from Wisconsin.

As the title suggests! I will pay for scions or trade! I have lots of cool citrus cuttings I can take from such as finger limes, red finger, blood finger limes, variegated navel, murcott, various kumquats, bergamot orange, and more.

The dwarf pomegranate I have finally fruited and it was gross lol. I want something worth my while.

I also have Coffee plants I can trade. Pm me with any cutting opportunities!

I just purchased the last the nursery had, Taichang Lemon which I’m told is a more rare variety? However, I am unable to find much info on them. Perhaps someone who owns/owned one can tell me a little more on them and how they do as container trees?

Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Wekiwa vs OroBlanco
« on: September 19, 2020, 10:07:31 PM »
I’m wondering which of these varieties I should buy? I am lacking a grapefruit/pomelo in my collection and seem to have narrowed to these. Of course I will be growing in containers, currently both available to me on dwarf/semi dwarf rootstock. Does anyone possibly own each tree, or can give me a comparative flavor profile? As well as if they’re good containerized varieties or not.

Thanks to all!

There’s been a lot of talk about this guy for whatever reason. Just wondering why? I ordered one just based on curiously, but I would like to know what other people use it for and why it’s so highly sought after?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Avocado scions (ISO)
« on: September 02, 2020, 07:26:18 PM »
ISO any good smaller diameter avocado scions. They are container plants but I’m open to just about any type of avocado scions. Just must be less than pencil thickness as my rootstock is slightly smaller yet. I have plenty to trade or I can purchase outright. I have over 15 citrus varieties as well as some other tropics.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Budwood trade anyone?
« on: September 01, 2020, 11:10:14 PM »
Just wondering if anyone out there was willing to trade budwood yet? It’s getting to be that time of year for trimming so I wanted to see what was open! I am in Wisconsin, I have no problem sending budwood. Make sure your state laws allow you to as well!

I have to trade:

Fukushu Kumquat
Meiwa
Lisbon lemon
Rangpur lime
Ponderosa lemon
Key lime
Limequat (Eustis)
Variegated centennial
Green Finger Lime
Oroblanco

Very very limited amount to trade of the following:
Tiger navel (variegated navel)
Australian Blood Lime (logees sells these)
Nordmann seedless
Meyer
Variegated calamonsi
Kishu

I also have dwarf pomegranate cuttings too that root super easy.

Hey guys, I’m just wondering if anyone ever used this stuff in their 5-1-1 mix? I’m sick of buying reptibark online for $18+ a bag.. I know, expensive. This is what is locally available to me. Would those cocoanut hulls be a great substitute? They’re around 1/8” in size from the looks.. or should I go with the double shredded cedar mulch rather than the hulls? Any opinions would be appreciated!

Citrus General Discussion / Pomona Lemon
« on: July 18, 2020, 11:05:58 AM »
I have only recently discovered this variety and I’m able to buy one. Ive been wanting a New Zealand for a while, so I’m wondering, since this is a sweet lemon, does this one compare? A good substitute for a sweet lemon?

Looking to see if anyone knows where I could find one of these to be shipped? Any members have any for sale? Also perhaps any tips on growing them in containers.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado potting mix
« on: June 11, 2020, 07:04:50 PM »
Hey all I just got my first avocados today! Going to stay in containers too. I live in the north so they must. Currently they’re small so I have them in 12” (5 gallon) containers. I have a potting mix and perlite 50:50 mixture. Is this good enough for them? Just wanna make sure. I grow lots of citrus and never have issues with this soil!

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Misc rootstock for sale
« on: June 08, 2020, 12:53:53 PM »
They’re sickly I know, I’m just trying to make space. I have grafted all the plants I desire to have so these are the leftover, sprouted in October of last fall? Not sure what they’re worth/if someone wants to trade me cuttings or plants for them lol. Will be shipped bare root. They range from 3-5” tall. They’ve been neglected.

I have about 4 swingle, and I think 12 with a mixture of STD trifoliate, flying dragon, and other misc tri’s.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ‘Day’ Avocado and Oro Negro
« on: May 30, 2020, 09:26:32 PM »
I just purchased these two avos (the day is mine and my bud’s is the oro). I’m just wondering a little info on them by owners? (Flavor, texture, size of fruit, vigor, etc..) I can’t seem to find anything online about these guys!! Not sure where else to look. I also plan to keep these in containers as I’m Zone 5, I have lots of experience with citrus, so I’m hoping some of this is similar to that in containers. I have a 10 gallon and a 15 gallon container ready for the two.

Any input is really appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado tree in containers question
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:00:15 PM »
Hello all, I’m trying to get some info before I go out and buy. I’ve been growing citrus in pots for years now, I’ve had great success! (At 15 varieties and climbing!) I do it all from propagate and root my own, to growing my own rootstock and grafting them: All in Wisconsin (5A). My climate is not ideal, but I have a love for tropical fruits!

I would like to get into avocados! I do not know much about their pollination other than A and B varieties.. or what that really means anyways in terms of pollination  and I know that “every plant is made to be outside, not in contaienrsbahahxhak”

I would just like to know what it would take to grow one and have it fruit successfully! Any variety better in containers than others? I have heard they’re quite similar to citrus in care, but harder to get to fruit and pollinate. I have heard that there’s no “real” dwarf avo, which I would love to start there if there is. I’m working on growing some rootstock and will eventually graft my own, but I’m thinking I want to get into it sooner than later!
