« on: November 10, 2014, 12:31:36 PM »
Do you guys think that I could get away with topping a Brogdon Avocado this time of year? It is about 15 feet tall and I would like to take about 3 to 4 feet off of the top.

Thanks,
Alex

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sapodilla care
« on: May 02, 2014, 04:23:14 PM »
Hello all

I bought a Haysa Sapodilla at the BRFC plant sale last weekend. I have no Sapodilla experience but to me it looks like it was recently repotted and may be planted a little to deep, I can dig down two and a half inches before I reach the roots.

Is that to deep for a Sapodilla? Should I remove some soil from the top or leave it the way it is?

Thanks,
Alex

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Oro Negro growth rate?
« on: March 10, 2014, 07:37:15 AM »
To all of you out there growing Oro Negro trees, how vigorous are they? I have had one in the ground for around two years now and it is only four and a half feet tall yet looks very bushy and healthy. On the other hand I have a Brogdon that is much younger that grows like a weed. Is my Oro Negro a dud?

Thanks,

Alex

P.S. Sorry for the spelling, good at numbers bad at letters!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado help!!
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:38:11 PM »
Hi all,

I have an Oro Negro Avocado thats been in the ground since Jan. Since then it has been a happy little tree, it doesn't grow much but it seems happy and bushy. lately here in the last week or so it has not looked right, just a little scraggely and has been losing leaves (slightly more than normal). There is also black splotches on the little trunk, but i have the same thing on my Carrie Mango tree so I don't think its anything major. I only water two to three times a week, its on the same schedule as my Brogdon that is groing like a weed, so I don't think its too much. I Fertilize with citrus fertilizer from Lowes once a month.

Any suggestions are welcome, I do not want to lose this little Avocado.

Thanks,

Alex

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Protecting fruit trees
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:37:59 AM »
After reading thruogh the miniature greenhouse thread I got curious as to how everyone protects their trees in the winter. I know that not everyone has this worry but living on the treasure coast I will have to have a plan for my trees. So please let me know your way of doing it, if you have pictures please show them.

Thanks,

Alex

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangos similar to Edward
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:47:01 PM »
Hello all,

In addition to adding another Avocado to my collection I also want to add another mango. Recently a friend gave me a couple of Edward Mangos and they were incredible! So I would like to try and find one that has a similar taste to an Edward but that is a dwarf variety. Any Opionions are welcome.

Also, I have been doing some reading on Pickering Mangos and would also like some feedback on that particular variety.

Thanks,
Alex

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brogdon or lula?
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:46:11 PM »
High everyone,

Brand new to the forum, and I love this place. I am fairly new to growing tropical fruit and only have one Mango tree (Carrie), one Avocado (Oro Negro) and one Guava (Cattley). I am looking to add to my humble collection another Avocado and was wondering if you experts had any opionions on the flavor of the Lulas or Brogdons. I have never tried either but have never really had a bad avocado. I live in Florida on the Treasure Coast so I should be in a region suited for either.

Thanks,

Alex
