Ohia lychee
« on: May 31, 2020, 04:22:05 PM »
My Ohia lychee keeps having the tips of all the branches die off. I pruned them back
and now it's doing it again. The tree is about 7' and been in the ground several years.
I have several other lychees in the yard that are smaller and no issues.
When I pruned the branches back I noticed the branches are still green just no leaves now?

How’s your soil? Sometimes you see the obvious issues with the leaves but it could be caused by damage to the roots. Do you have a picture of the tree including pictures of older and younger leaves?

Heres a picture of my ohia with the dying tips of most branches.
Does anyone have an Ohia tree? And more importantly how is it growing?

Also I am including a picture of my Hap ik. I have several other lychees and
all seem to be doing OK except the Ohia.

It’s hard to say what’s causing the tip dieback. It could be nutritional deficiencies like Zinc and Boron or a fungal disease. The photo quality is not the best but some of the leaves do look very similar to these leaves.

If you see pink or white lesions on the bark of the tree, it could be Pink Limb Blight caused by Erythricium salmonicolor.

It could also be leaf blight

Perhaps try a foliar spray with micronutrients and if that doesn’t help, you can try a fungicide recommended by your local nursery.

Thanks Simon for the response. I don't think its a nutritional issue. I have been foliar
feeding heavy this year with Southern Ag, Miracle grow, humic acid and lately I have been trying some new
organic spray. My other trees are responding well. The leaf blight is the direction I will pursue.
I thought I hit the tree last year with Copper sulfate and an imydocloprid drench. I thought
copper sulfate was a treatment for fungal issues? It wouldn't hurt to hit the tree again.
I read a little and it was saying there is also a blight caused by bacteria?
I have some research to do...

And Bill I will get a close up photo of the leaf tips
Thanks also
