Went on a planting spree!

I spent the last 4 days planting up the yard. Been a lot of work digging holes, thankfully the soil is sugar sand  . I left out about 15 or so other plants I planted, I forgot to take pics lol.

Why the Marula and lycium barbarum?  The Marula gets kind of big, and seems to be more interesting than good.

Good on you to have spices!  Any nuts planned?

Nice to see nullzero! Are those all Florida mango types? I have read somewhere there are mango varieties developed in California better suited for California climate. But you may live in a warmer part of California.

Yeah this is the Florida property. Shah8, I wanted to get something exotic with dual use, the Marula also has an edible seed. As for its size, I am going to prune it aggressively to get it bushier. As for the Lycium barbarum, I like the taste of the fresh fruit. This selection is suppose to have larger fruit (which is a big plus), also the leaves are edible and quite tasty.

Macadamia and other nuts are going to be planted in the fall. Also have about 3 large mature oak trees and a few smaller oak trees, going to remove 3-4 of them and keep the larger ones. So I am going to start using acorns in the future since they are raining down all over the yard (after leeching out tannin). Just planning things out atm. I also planted Salak palms close to the edge of the property, going to use as a hedge. Have about 10 coconut palm trees on the property, about 4 of them are producing heavily. One has 12 large coconuts on it.

Soil is a moderately/fast draining mostly sand with some loam. I am pretty sure it is slightly/strong acidic. What I was told is just mulch generously and everything will pretty much grow.

From the description its closest to what is called a "Hobe Series" soil

The first time was with the prickly pear that I got from you. I had been searching for years for it.

Now, you introduce the 'Pindo Palm.' I've been looking for a quality fruit producing palm, that will bear in S. Florida, for years. I've always wished that Date Palms would bear fruit here, just as they do in the Canary Islands. According to UF, the Pindo Palm will bear fruit in all of Florida. Since they grow slowly, I'd rather buy a mature one that's already producing fruit, I just wonder how much money that is going to be, if I can find it. If you can let me know where you got it (and if they have others that are older), I'd really appreciate it. I've called you in the past the 'Indiana Jones' of Opuntias, now I think I'll call you the 'Indiana Jones' of quality fruit producing rare plants, thanks many for turning the spotlight on this palm.

I plants in spurts too because I spend time thinking where the heck do I plant this tree to do the maximum good. Even so I have moved and replanted about 4 fruit trees this year meaning the first place I planted them was changed...moved them to a new location.

Yeah marula is usually dioecious, though I hear its rarer but there are trees with both sexes of flowers. I plan to graft a female or male branch on the tree eventually. I have a second beautiful marula tree which I intend to plant on another side. I am going to try to manage the trees to 15ft or so with aggressive pruning.

I was in Orlando about 17 or so years ago and in the court yard of a building I was visiting, was a planter with what I thought was an absolutely gorgeous palm (and I am not that much of a fan of palms generally). I looked it up at determined it to be a Jelly Palm a/k/a Pindo Palm and took some fruit and tasted it.  Flavor was pretty good but flesh was scant.  However, at that time I was in a mode of collecting anything and everything.  I took seed home and eventually planted it out in the yard. I have one tree.  Its fairly good size now after all these years.  It grows nicely, looks good but has never bloomed.

Pindos grow like molasses in the spring.  Slow growing at least to start.  Super drought and cold tolerant, beautiful.  I find it hard to believe you have a hard time sourcing them in So Fla.  My mother has one one in central Fla., beautiful tree, a little thorny but still nice.  I have couple of seedlings that were growing in the arms, mine are potted and still barely a foot and a half tall at about 2 years (ok, I may have some neglect in there).  They will get taller if they are shaded.
I think that they would be the perfect palm if they grew faster.

Thanks Harry, yeah I am going for a diverse collection of tasty fruits that bear during long periods of the year. I have a few that I did not list that are in the ground now. Such as Lucuma, Jujubes, Olives, Pomegranate, Cereus sp., Aframomum sp., Parkia biglobosa, Salak palms, Maihuenia poeppigii , and some others. I have not even gotten around to the dragon fruit vines yet.

On the mango front I think I am set, I would not mind more... but in reality I have to many.

I agree the problem is the space  . Luckily I got a little over a half an acre to work with. I am quickly seeing it get filled in, though the 7 oak trees tend to take a lot of real estate. I am going to work to remove 4 of them in the next year or so. Will leave 3 large ones in place.

Goji has not flowered and fruited yet. I believe its going to next season most likely (both were recently bought and were not the largest plants). The leaves have a nice size to them compared to other goji berries I have seen.

I purchased a Goji -Big lifeberry, and mine is just starting to flower. No fruit yet, but I'm hoping it will fruit soon.. I was just hoping someone else had had better luck.

This large one has large delicate leaves, and has a more sprawling/long lanky limb growth pattern. I have it in a tomato cage to help support the long branches. It seems to like it. This one definitely needs to be staked.

The Goji plants, I grew from dried organic berries from the Grocery store, have a stronger structure, a more upright growth with the leaves that are smaller, thicker, and darker green. They look more like miniature olive tree leaves. I just started those this year, so no flowers on them yet. Maybe next summer..

Seen it growing and fruiting in Southern California, Florida, and i have a tree here that fruits well here. Yes the amount of pulp is scant, but some of them have a great sweet/sour candy-like taste. A very pretty palm with unusual colored foliage, but slow growing palm.
I'm about to plant some marulas myself (sourced from Carraig). I remember him stating that the nut is by far the tastiest part, but i've yet to taste the nut.

The tomentosa is a seedling I got labeled as dioica.  So I'd probably stick with the name dioica. i think Helton is throwing us off a bit...I think this is the name he gives to dioica.

btw...marula is very easy to grow.   I have a pair of trees that are in 10 gal pots....they rooted into the ground, forming large tap roots.  When I finally moved my trees, the tap roots cracked off in the ground....I was worried the tree would be stressed because its root system was compromised...but the trees didn't skip a beat...they didn't really wilt much...and I kept them in full sun (watering daily as usual). The most surprising thing was the fact that the tap roots, which broke off into the ground, started to grow leaves!  Now I have new marula plants!  So I learned Marula is easy to propagate from root cuttings.  One way to propagate your tree, is to plant a potted specimen on top of another pot of soil...when the tap root makes it's way into the pot underneath your tree, cut the root...and you should have a another rooted  marula in no time.
