Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are they worth the space ?
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:24:20 PM »
Let me first explain the subject .

I just bought the only available lot right next to my orchard/nursery at a total rip-off price ( I may get a divorce over this ) I could have gotten a few hectares somewhere else for the same price but considering it is in a tourist area , Tequila factories , 3 Zip lines , hiking , horse back riding and name it...I feel in the long run it will get more expensive , unless the Mayans where right about December 21 - 2012 end of the world as we know it .

That said , I still have a lot , and I mean a lot , of plants still in nursery bags some even fruiting and quite a few that I have no idea what they are ( lost tags , happens to most of us fanatics )

So , I have my doubts about the following if they are really worth the square meter price keeping in mind I am not 20 anymore , more like going down the hill :

Kola nut
Tahiti nut
Cinnamon
Pili nut
Monkey pod
Amazon grape
Joazeiro
etc....

Or to make it easier for you , if you only could only plant 5 fruit trees which ones would you , forget about mango , lichee , longan and the more common ones , I am talking about the hard core collectors stuff , that may appeal to the general public.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cheena - Jack x Chempedak
« on: August 08, 2012, 01:19:43 PM »
Who has cheena fruiting in this part of the word ( FL and Caribean )
Mine was planted from seed in 2008 , now only 5 feet ( 1.50 meter ) tall , grows faster than chempedak but I have jack varieties ( from seed ) that fruited in less than 4 years....
Once in a while I trow some triple 17 at it ( nothing else available in this tourist area )

Tropical Fruit Discussion / For the grafting experts.
« on: August 04, 2012, 01:46:03 PM »
We all know that grafting ( from a producing tree on a seedling ) will speed up fruiting.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that grafting a seedling on a mature tree may produce the same effect ???

I am looking at this to make cocktail trees and save space.

Unfortunately I am a lauzy grafter...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia uvahla ?
« on: August 03, 2012, 06:49:35 PM »
Today I picked the biggest fruits so far , 8 cm in diameter  , super acid with the nicest apricot smell and flavor , I was gonna post these but they were stolen while unloading the pick up .....

Still I am not 100% sure that this small bush was correctly ID'd , they look like an oversized E. stipitata , more fuzzy and orange , different in taste also . They are definitely not the E. victoriana , leaves are different....( victoriana keeps on flowering and no fruit ....)
Fruit is not round or pear shaped....and fruits several times a year.

Googling the uvahla says fruits are 1 to 2"...I give up and leave it to the experts ..you guys....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can you ID this ? A Baobab maybe ?
« on: July 28, 2012, 08:21:14 PM »
I have the bad habit of planting every seed that comes in my path and not always marking the pot or nursery bag , most of the time I remember....but this one no idea...

The reason I mentioned a Baobab is that it came up in a planter where I planted baobab seeds a long time ago.

Got lucky on this one , only 3 trees and 2 females , climbing a ladder every few days to smell the fruits , as soon as they smell like a Camembert that is ready to be thrown out they should be ready to pick .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenia luschnatiana - Pitomba
« on: July 21, 2012, 07:22:06 PM »
Although it is probably one of the more common Eugenias grown in the US I never had good luck keeping them alive ( no idea why ) I only have one plant left , doing good , and hoping for fruit soon , some report them fruiting very fast 2 - 3 years , is that correct ? Is this another sour one ?
My fasted fruiting Eugenia 1 year after planting the seed was Eugenia pitanga , the dwarf , only one fruit but still a performance....
