Rooting Guava Cuttings - need Help
« on: November 10, 2017, 12:01:07 PM »
Hi Folks, need your expert advise on rooting guava cuttings. I know Ethan does this quite successfully. I wanted to know from Ethan or others the tips and tricks to root guava cutting.
1. wood - should be matured or green fresh growth
2. thickness of wood.
3. rooting hormone
4. soil medium
5. where to store.

Please post your recommendations.

Thanks

Been trying to find the following topic and finally found it. In the middle of the page there is info on rooting with vermiculite.

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=877.msg11444#msg11444

Also came across the following link regarding high success rate with vermiculite;

I am attempting to root Indonesian seedless cuttings from my potted tree. Started with 6 softwood cuttings, 2 still hanging on at 5 weeks. The dark green leaves give me hope.
Found out a couple of days ago that my original tree dried up suddenly, so hope these make it.

Trying to root them in a humidity dome. I mist the cuttings a few times a day and bottom heat is provided with a heat mat. Used promix bx with extra perlite added for the medium. Forgot about the vermiculite till you asked the question and I started looking for the previous thread on rooting.

Having trouble attaching a picture right now. Getting internal server error. Will try later.

i tried at first some cuttings that were maybe a bit thinner than a pencil. (in hindsight, they were a bit too skinny). left a leaf or two and cut the leaves in half. put them in a small pot with some soiless mix and covered them up with a water bottle to create a humid environment. then put them in a shady area with no direct sunlight.

none of them took. (however, figs, loquats all took - all of different sizes from pencil diameter to 1.5" diameter thick branches).

i'm going to try a larger diameter on the guava next to see.

I would root it on the tree (air layer).

There are tons of youtube videos on air layering guava.

I tried to root dozens of guava cuttings of different cultivars and thickness in a greenhouse where I have rooted lots of other species -- none rooted for me.  (Not proof of anything except that they are not easy to root.)

I rooted a bunch of brazilian guava cuttings (very similar to cattley) and used lignified but not woody scions about 1/8" diameter. Stripped all the leaves except for two at the top of the scion. Dipped bottom in Clonex gel and put into pots with spagnum/perlite mix. Put into a humidity bin (rubbermaid tub) under growlights. Added bottom heat set to 85 F. They rooted and pushed new growth in a few weeks.

I have not tried with tropical guava yet, but Daleys had a youtube video that is basically the same method and it works for them.

I agree completely, i have 100% success in guava air layering and you can start a bigger tree rooting a pencil or even bigger diameter branch

I have a couple of newly planted seedless guava with 2 tips each. I will be cutting off the tips in 3 months. Rooting the cuttings is a better option than air layering.

I recently rooted one cutting from Ruby Supreme guava. I had 5 cuttings in different diameters and only one, a pencil size, rooted.

Rooting the cuttings is a better option than air layering.

WHY??

Winter is here. Air layering is not good this time.
When air layering the tip gets food from roots but not give sugar to roots. I would air layer on big trees but not small ones I have.

Rooting, I never have any success even in a controlled environment.
Unless they're small plants or herbs.

Air-Layer, is so easy and almost 99.99% successful. (.01% from misfire)
I usually do it around Spring time, works better than summer for me.
- Guava 1-2 months
- Various citrus (Finger limes, Grape fruit, Yuzu, Sudachi, etc) 1-2 months
- Longan 2-4 months
- Jaboticaba 1-2 months

Months = root time

My problem is that I got an exotic guava wood that was a twig, I was lucky to get it to take on a graft, the wood size is about 1/4" or less, dont have air layer option. Got 3 branches. wanted to try another rooting. This guava fruits year round so growth and when we root should not be a problem.

Added a few drops of rooting hormone to the water. Let the cuttings to stay in this solution for a couple of days, watching the water, then replaced with fresh water and so on every other day. The cuttings were on a sunny window sill for a month or so.

You're smart to change the water with the hormone. The hormone that promotes root initiation will also inhibit root growth. More is not better in this case.

I did something similar to wax jambu. Green wood cutting, remove all leaves except top pair, treat with hormone and root in water in bright indirect light, change water every few days to wash away bacteria growth. Rooted in 3 weeks for me the first time. I find that cutting half of a leaf will tend to make the leaf fall off faster. Now I just leave the top pair with no cutting them shorter.
