Citrus General Discussion / Pomelo hybrid from Medici citrus collection
« on: January 01, 2022, 09:15:21 AM »
Finally ripe fruit of C. grandis x C. paradisi called “Piriforme”. Plant I bought from Tintori nursery years ago.
This pomelo hybrid belongs to the Medici citrus collection that was started by Cosimo I between 1554 and 1568 and reached its height under Cosimo III.
The fruit has thick rind that turns yellow when fully ripe. The thick pith is not edible and the flesh tastes like mix of pomelo and grapefruit, its a bit sour, but edible. Mostly for ornamental purpose.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soursop fruiting in living room.
« on: December 31, 2021, 10:04:48 AM »
This year showed me, how tricky the right time to harvest is. Right now, I collected my one and only fruit from my annona in living room and this time I collected it while still partly hard on touch.
And it was a mistake, pulp is not as tender as ussual, slightly sour and the taste is full of that bleach chlorine odour typical for muricata flowers.
But it looks like taste is improving while I let the harvested fruit rest in room for 24 hours.

It used to be rollinia herzogii, I think that no rollinia except deliciosa is worthy to grow for fruit.

I am using 60 to 120 litres pots for small plants to mimic open ground to induct the grow and never had any issue.
I am using Klasmann TS 3 with clay substrate, which is not originaly for such plants, but it works well.

32
My experiences from more than 15 years of growing citruses in pots.

1- I had the worst experiences with special soils for citrus, never use special citrus soil for citrus.
2- Its much harder to kill citrus plant with drought than by overwatering.
3- Citruses from supermerkets usually come alredy infected by phytophtora, in that case it does not matter how good your care is.
4- Size of pot does not matter.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Primo Fiore lemon
« on: May 16, 2021, 11:50:19 AM »
The Primofiore is not a name of cultivar, it means fruits from first flowering.
The primofiore (literally, "first flower") matures from October 1st, has an elliptical shape, skin and flesh which varies from light green to lemon-yellow, and lemon-yellow juice; the bianchetto ripens from April 15th, is ovoid-elliptical, with light yellow skin, yellow flesh and lemon-yellow juice; the verdello matures from July 1st, is an spheroid elliptical shape, light green skin, and lemon-yellow flesh and juice.
The cultivar name is  femminello Siracusano aka Limone di Siracusa IGP.

Right now I have  avocado fruit on Hass in pot in greenhouse from last year flowering.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Shiikuwasha
« on: April 10, 2021, 11:40:15 AM »

Tested this winter yes down to -8C it can survive although autumn growth dies.
Almost all the nurseries in Europe sell Shikuawasha on Alemow rootstock. The rootstock will die at -2C to 0C or before most likely because of root rot. I usually toss to compost or give to someone those plants with Alemow, they all get root problems after few years.
I have my plants on PT.
This year I will graft few plants on Shikuwasha seedlings and test it for hardiness as well. Although on its own it is not resistant to root rot.

I don't think oscar tintori uses alemow, they mainly use Poncius trifoliate and so far mine has survived longer than any alemow plants i bought from local sellers. (well you already know my background)

I ordered a second one from them, though I hope this one will have greener foliage because as you can see on the picture mine has yellowish leaves, some turned much greener already but the rest remains.
Otherwise plant is in good health,  I left it outside at 0°C in februari and nothing died, though it did not have new growth, only new flowers but they did not fall off.
I do would like to know how you got the leaves of yours to be so very large and dark green though, I already give nutrients with enough N in it but maybe you do / give something extra ?

I visited tintori in the past and also bought many plants from them. They never used poncirus as rootstock. All plants were grafted on macrophylla or volkameriana.

Ilya11, tell us about Southern Yellow.  I have never heard of it, and I'm sure many on this forum, if not most, have never heard of it.  Is it a mandarin?  I typed "Southern Yellow" on the Internet but found nothing.

If you want to know more about it, copy  サザンイエロー   to google

Great work CanadaGrower!

It looks like family Ueyama has great tradition as Honorary Consul for Serbian Kingdom and now Serbia.
http://www.serbianembassy.jp/ENGLISH/HonoraryConsulateGeneral.html
According to croatian sources, in 1933, ship from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia transported the Banat wheat  to Japan.
After the ship was unloaded, and the Japanese tasted the bread made from that wheat,  honorary consul in Japan Ujeyama sent
as gift  372 citrus trees (Unshiu, Honikan and Natsu Mikan) on this boat back to Yugoslavia.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ilama seedlings dropping new growth
« on: November 02, 2020, 01:16:47 PM »
Humidity does not help, first those marks on leaf, then leaf drops, then die back, then plant dies. It happened to plants indoor at room temp. also to plants in greenhouse with winter temperature approx. 7°Celsius. So I think it has  something to do with missing UV light, but ... ?

We discussed it several times in this forum.
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=11807.msg261361#msg261361
I witnessed it on all of my llama seedlings.
It looks like it is specific for annona diversifolia, after few years of observation, it looks like it has something to do with full spectrum of sunlight. Outdoor, this defect is strongly supressed or missing, indoor glass or macrolon have some uv filters. Its really hard to keep ilama seedling alive indoor.

For me the number one is Kinnow, super taste and ripe fruit keeps quality on tree for a long time.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: vaniglia sanguingo fruit
« on: November 26, 2019, 08:18:01 AM »
Citrus taste varies strongly, depending on growing conditions. I growed tangelo Sampson for years in pot and fruits were practically  inedible. I was thinking about top working the tree, but last year I put the tree to the ground in greenhouse and next season I was really suprized by the fruit quality and taste. Skin was much thiner, more yelow then orange and fruit taste was quit good, like softly bitter, sweet grapefruit.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Honikan mandarin
« on: October 30, 2019, 02:26:19 PM »
Could it possibly be the Japanese variety Aomikan?
It's only a guess, but I can easily imagine Aomikan being hand-written and then incorrectly read or copied as Honikan.
The variety is normally picked  in Japan while still green, but eventually turns orange.

My idea is too, that it is most likely a misspelled name.
Btw.: Aomikan is  cultivar, or it is just name for unripe mandarin?

Citrus General Discussion / Honikan mandarin
« on: October 29, 2019, 01:51:58 PM »
In former Yugoslavia nurseries they sold mandarin called Honikan.
Since that time it is in collections.
Adavo nursery in CR also sells it.
http://www.rakytnik.com/index.php/galerie/citrusy/mandarinky/citrus-reticulata-blanco/honikan
According to yugoslavian sources in 1934 japan consul sent 372 trees of unshiu, honikan and natsu mikan as gift to Yugoslavian kingdom.

But I cannot find citrus called honikan in Japan. I would like to find out what is this cultivar about.
