Ugly Betty, F-29 (Juicy Peach), HW-14, Sunrise
« on: July 02, 2012, 06:42:12 PM »
My wife stopped by Zills today and picked up some trees and a few mangoes! One in the box was labeled Ugly Betty and supposedly is in production for next spring!

Awesome mango, great sweet flavor, real ugly!

a couple others..

Just ate another one... Super sweet, mild, fiberless, good seed to flesh ratio.. Didnt detect any citrus flavor, but I could if I tried real hard.. These damn mangoes are all so good..

In fairness, the HW-14 wasnt as delightful to me.. Kind of had a vegetable taste at first then sweet and fibery.. Not as noteable in my book..

Also had a Sunset that did have some citrus taste and was REALLY fragrant.. That one was really good, not as big as Betty though!

Sunrise tastes similar to Jakarta (its parent) but is much better, imo.

I really like Ugly Betty. Its a truly fiberless mango; a 'freestone'  type.  I thought it to be fairly rich in flavor actually.

The F-29 on the other hand tasted peach-like to me when I first tried it, if I'm remembering right . Second evaluation was more citrus/tangerine/orange like.

All are really good.

Can't comment on HW-14, haven't had that one yet.

When you say "freestone"... are you saying it is seedless?

Freestone means the pulp doesn't stick to the seed, not that it is free of a stone.

glad they didn't name it Ugly Natalie!

If that was the case, they would have called the mango tree something like "Nice Nectar Natalie"...   :)

They would sell a lot more trees with nice names.   Who would buy a tree called, "Nappy Natalie"...   ;)

Your review of the Juicy Peach makes it sound pretty good. It's a nice looking mango as well. Zill's has now finally released the tree for sale so I might have to go buy one. I think DonGeorgio had a few to trade if anyone is interested. I think he may still have some. Here's his post I saw today:

Lady's Choice I think counts as one, but you probably wouldn't want to eat that unless you're into East Indian.

Zill should have a website!

They kind of do but it never gets updated.

I thought Orange Sherbert was something that Walter Zill had at his house and never officially started propogating? Not the same as Zill's High Performance where Gary works...

It's Gary's tree..Walter top worked one of his tree to OS...Walter only sells the fruit..Zill HPP has not released the tree for sale yet...the only way to get one is wait or plant a poly seed and wait...

Orange Sherbet and Fruit Punch may or may not be released next year.  It seems that Gary is on the fence on those two.  (At least that is what I heard from someone who works there.)

I think from all of  zills mangoes the coconut cream mango is my favorite.  It is fiberless and creamy.  Incredible taste.  If anyone is interested in any variety in particular please visit the wild papaya nursery at www.thewildpapaya.com.  Only a couples varieties are posted but we can get pretty much anything you like just email me with your inquiry.  Keep checking back as i will be uploading more varieties.

Does Juicy Peach have a flavor similar to Glenn? I planted a Sunrise in December and it is a relatively fast grower. I'm looking forward to trying some of these new releases in the next couple of years when my trees finally produce  :D

Here is a pic of my Sunrise mango I picked it up from Exotica and it has been steadily flushing with this unusually warm winter we have been having. The tree so far has a bushy growth habit with a lot of lateral branches

I agree... I lover the way the tree grows...very beautiful and strong.  Plus, it branches out laterally.  and forms a nice vase shape virtually on its own.  Think I am going to get another one soon

Of the mango trees I have the new Zills releases have been the fastest growing and healthiest. I have 2 Coconut cream, 1 sweet tart, and 1 Sunrise. Other trees include 1 Edward and 1 VP. I am debating on whether to get the Juicy Peach since there isn't much info out there yet but it sounds like an awesome mango! I like that it is a Tommy Atkins seedling because it may help with disease resistance and production. I just hope it doesn't have the fiber and blandness of its parent. Although I'm pretty sure Zills would never release a mango with those characteristics ;)

still trying to decide on pina colada and pineapple pleasure...gotta wait and try them this summer because a tart mango sounds hit or miss.

Harvest Moon and Ugly Betty get good reviews too.  Any plans to get those 2?

still trying to decide on pina colada and pineapple pleasure...gotta wait and try them this summer because a tart mango sounds hit or miss.

Harvest Moon and Ugly Betty get good reviews too.  Any plans to get those 2?

I have all four of those:  Pina Colada, Pineapple Pleasure, Harvest Moon, and Ugly Betty.... unfortunately I haven't tasted any of them.  My Pina Colada had a mango last year, but was unripe when I tasted it.  :-(   The Pina Colada is a small mango.  My Pina Colada is covered with flowers now, so I am optimistic of some fruit this year.  The Pineapple Pleasure is a larger mango and was good enough that a friend removed his Pina Colada to make room for a Pineapple Pleasure.   Subsequently we heard the Pineapple Pleasure is a shy bearer.

If you are into aesthetics, Harvest Moon is a very pretty tree. I tried the fruit last summer and its delicious as well.
