First try with aronia / black chokeberry
« on: July 30, 2019, 09:47:39 AM »
I found a nice one for sale at a local nursery so I figured I'd give it a try.  So far the fruit is terrible... very little juice, grainy.   I'm hoping they just need to ripen a bit more.   If not I will move it to the woods for the animals to eat.

It looks like A. prunifolia. Try A. melanocarpa - fruits are not only bigger but more juicy.

the label says:

LNF - 'Autumn Magic' Black Chokeberry   Aronia melanocarpa

I agree it does look a lot like the other variety you mentioned.

They still have little juice and are astringent, even though they appear fully ripe.  I just picked them all and juiced them.  The juice was okay, astingent and not all that sweet.  I tossed it in with some lemonade I made.

This bush is going out in the woods for the animals.

For me my plants taste the same as what you describe but i love the taste and the astrigent taste is just amazing. It depends on the person if you like it or not. I dont know if there are non astrigent varieties
