Breadfruit @ Sedanos
« on: February 14, 2014, 06:59:40 AM »
For those of you in South Florida who have not tried fresh Breadfruit yet, Sedano's Supermarkets currently has fresh ones available for 99cts per lb which is very reasonable. These are probably from the Dom Republic or Jamaica. They can be eaten boiled, fried as tostones or any number of ways. Try them if you get a chance. Good stuff!

Loved the way they looked hanging on the trees when I was in Jamaica.  The leaves also look cool (huge and tropical).  Wasn't all that impressed with the flavor/texture though.

What is the best way to prepare it?

The fruit has to be picked just right. Much of what is sold is picked too young, and too ripe the dish will end up being sweetish. Two of my favorite ways are cut up in thin slices (1/8 th inch) then fried and lightly salted. The other way is steamed, mashed, and mixed with sauted onion and salt fish.

Very simply, hard (unripened) breadfruit is starchy, like a potato, and can be used in same way that potato would be prepared. Once the breadfruit gets soft it turns sweet and is used more like a fruit. Most people, including myself, prefer breadfruit in hard starchy stage.
There is a great breadfruit book you can buy online with 101 breafruit recipes. It's an extremely versatile food...so many ways to prepare it. Like any food you have to know what you are doing. On it's own it's very bland and dull, but mixed with right ingredients it becomes fabulous. One of favorite ways here is to cook it in coconut milk and make a sort of curry out of it.

I am not growing breadfruit but have a few Jakfruit, Marang and Pedelai....Seeded breadfruit has about same growing requirements as unseeded Breadfruit. They are very cold sensitive but will fruit here if we have a few mild winters

There is a Jamaican grocery store on 441 in Miami Gardens (south of county line rd) that has breadfruit.  It is $1.79/lb.  The store is in the plaza just before nice mon Jamaican bakery.

Just fyi

is it better to get the green ones or the ones that are darker?  Are they more ripe, or just skin discoloration?  I know you said it's best unripe...

I prefer clean green skinned fruits which infers freshness but sometimes the darker skinned ones are fine also. It's just the luck of the draw!
