Tropical Fruit Discussion / What causes rot inside mango fruit?
« on: November 12, 2022, 09:00:30 PM »
Hi guys, a friend of mine grows Spirit of 76 here in SoCal. The last couple of years the fruit appears to ripen on the tree fine. The problem is when you cut the fruit open it has rotten around the seed. Here are some pictures. Anyone know what causes this?

Hi all, I have some Isan Indigo Sugar Apple seedlings for sale.  This is the red sugar apple that is also chewy.  This is a rare tree.  I obtained the seed directly from Green Planet Farm.  Sugar Apple's don't grow true to seed.  They usually are very similar to the mother tree but not identical.  Because of this I paid the extra to get seeds directly from Green Planet Farm.  As far as I know grafted trees of this variety aren't available.  These have been grown in deep pots to promote a deep tap root.  This will hopefully promote a faster growing tree.  These plants are almost 3 feet tall and almost 1.5 years old.  They are $100 each. Only five available.  Local pickup only.

Hi all, Rollinia Deliciosa seedlings for sale.  These are about 1.5 years old and 12-14" tall.  They have been grown in a deep pot to promote a long tap root.  This will hopefully make them faster growing.  Pickup in Long Beach, Ca or shipped.  They cost $30 each.
Shipping is about $10-$15 for one tree and $5-$10 each for multiple trees.

Hi all, I have the following seedlings for sale.  They are all grown in deep pots which promote a deep tap root.  Hopefully the deep tap root will make them grow quicker.  They are for local pick up in Long Beach California or I can ship them.  Shipping should be $10-$15 for one or $5-$10 each for multiple plants.

Garcinia Intermedia, 8-10" tall, they are a 1.5 years old.  $25 each

Garcinia Madruno, 8-10" tall, 1.5 years old.  $30 each.

Garcinia sp. Pacuri, this variety grows very fast for a Garcinia.  It is also supposed to be very cold hardy for a Garcinia.  The fruit is supposed to taste similar to Achachairu.  These are 12-14" tall, 1.5 years old and $35 each.

Garcinia sp Russell's Sweet.  This is an extremely rare variety in the United States.  It is supposed to be one of the best tasting Garcinia varieties and a very large fruit.  They are almost a year old.  They are 7-9" tall and $100 each.

I have some 5 gallon Inga Feuillei for sale.  They are 3-4 feet tall.  These grow very quickly into a large shade tree.  They are also nitrogen fixing, meaning they take nitrogen out of the air and put it into the soil.  Pick up only, $30 each.  I'm in Long Beach, California.

Hi all, does anyone know much about the "Giant Atis" Atemoya?  If memory serves me right there is a picture somewhere on this forum of the fruit.  It was yellow if I remember correctly.  Does anyone have comments on growth habit,  productivity, taste or the look of the fruit?  Any help would be appreciated.  I have a grafted tree and I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or not.  I'm limited on space.

Thanks

Hi all, I grow the following bananas.  All heights listed are the height of the Pseudostem i.e. "trunk" at fruiting height. By propping I mean that certain varieties when fruiting become top heavy and will fall over. To prevent this they need to be propped up.  The true value here is that you are actually getting the variety you pay for.  Many, many bananas sold online and at nurseries are mislabeled.

2-5 gallon plants are $35 and about 3 feet tall total height excluding pot.  Paggi, Red Iholene and Dwarf Red cost $45.
15 gallon plants are $50 and 5 feet or taller, total height excluding pot.  Paggi, Red Iholene and Dwarf Red cost $60.

Currently available for sale I have Dwarf Brazilian in 3 gallon and 15 gallon and Paggi in 3 gallon.

Dwarf Brazilian - Beautiful plant, grows to 9-10' tall, nice wide dark green leaves, produces large bunches of delicious fruit. This is a Hawaiian variety. In Hawaii it is called an Apple Banana. THIS IS A MUST HAVE! If you only grow one banana, this is it! Never needs propping.

Brazilian - I am 99% positive of the correct ID on this variety. It grows to 11-14' tall and is a beast of a plant! It produces huge bunches of bananas that are slightly larger than Dwarf Brazilian and in my opinion taste a little better. The plant usually doesn't need propping.

Gold Finger - Excellent banana, grows to about 8-9', large fruit. It is a cross between Dwarf Brazilian and Gran Nain (the bananas you buy in the store i.e. Chiquita bananas). It tastes similar to Dwarf Brazilian but it produces more bananas that are slightly larger.  Most of the time it doesn't need propping.

Mysore -  Very vigorous, monster of a banana plant. The plant is beautiful with reddish purple coloring in the trunk, and the underside of the leaf. Produces huge bunches of very sweet flavorful bananas. Widely grown in India and one of the favorite dessert bananas there. Very ornamental and a good producer of quality bananas. Grows to 13-14' tall. Requires propping.

Blue Java AKA Ice Cream - This is the real Ice Cream banana. Most bananas sold as Ice Cream aren't the real thing. What makes this banana unique is it's light and fluffy texture with a slight vanilla taste. The fruit ripens to a blue, silver color with light green leaves on the plant. Grows to 12-13' tall. This is a Hawaiian variety. It requires propping. Call or text for pricing on this rare variety.

Dwarf Namwa - Produces 200-300 of the sweetest bananas you have ever tasted! Fruit flesh is dense and light orange colored. This banana is from Thailand.  Does not require propping. Grows to 7-9' tall.

Red Iholene - One of the most beautiful banana plants due to its attractive coloring of red and purple on the trunk and under sides of the leaves. The pink fleshed bananas are delicious fresh or cooked and is a favorite Hawaiian variety. Very beautiful plant but it is cold sensitive.  It grows to 12'.  This variety costs $10 more than other varieties.

Gros Michel - The original store bought banana! Up until the 1950's this was the most popular banana sold in the world. Most of the plants were killed by disease and the banana industry switched to a new variety. The Gros Michel is a little larger and MUCH better tasting than the bananas sold in stores today. Grows to 12', requires propping.

California Gold - What makes this banana special is it's cold tolerance. It is reported to be the most cold hardy fruiting banana. Excellent for colder areas where bananas usually can't grow. This banana is very good eaten fresh and amazing when cooked as a plantain.  It grows to 8' tall and does not require propping.

Dwarf Red - Very beautiful short plant that is sensitive to cold. Only Gros Michel is more cold sensitive. The plant has red coloring to Pseudostem and fruit. If you live close to the coast I highly recommend this variety. It is a beautiful plant, with beautiful fruit that tastes great and doesn't need to be propped. These are the red bananas you can buy in the store. It grows very slow. Grows to only 7-8' tall. This variety costs $10 more than other varieties.

Paggi - Not much is know about this variety. It is believed to be related to Gros Michel. Many that have tried it say it is the best tasting banana they have ever had. I believe it grows to about 12 feet. Limited availability. This variety costs $10 more than other varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What kind of sugar cane is this?
« on: April 29, 2022, 12:12:05 PM »
Anyone know what kind of sugar cane this is?  The grower says it is black sugar cane.  It doesn't look black to me.  It is supposed to be a soft chewing type.  I'm going to pick some up today.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to prune newly grafted Annona?
« on: April 27, 2022, 03:23:03 PM »
Hi all, I have several newly grafted Annona.  They are mostly Atemoya and Cherimoya.  I have a question on how to prune them.  I want the plant to continue to grow as the main branch or trunk of the tree.  So should I remove all of the new growth on the scions except for one branch?  If so when should I do this?  For example the picture below.  Should I remove one of the main new branches?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi all, I was wondering what peoples opinions are.  Does Pink's Mammoth or Dream Atemoya taste better?  I'm specifically interested in peoples experiences with fruit grown in Southern California if possible.  But all input is appreciated.  I know both are high quality Atemoyas.  But is there a general consensus on which tastes better?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are Emperor Lychee usually this large?
« on: September 15, 2021, 09:50:04 PM »

I have a small one year old Emperor Lychee tree.  It is in a 15 gallon pot and about 30" tall.  It set many small fruit this year.  I tried to remove them all because I wanted the tree to put its energy into vegetative growth instead of producing fruit. Well apparently I missed four fruit.  All I have to say is WOW.  These things are huge!  Who needs Erdon Lee when we can grow these?  Below are some photos of the fruit with a silver dollar and tennis ball for size reference.  I know you can play tricks with a camera and make things look larger then they are by putting them closer to the camera.  I tried not to do that.  These pictures show how big these fruit truly are.  So my question is, is this normal?  Do Emperor normally get this big?

Hi all, my wife bought this papaya at the store and I was interested in growing some of the seeds.  Does anyone know what type of papaya it is?  It is from Brasil and all it says is HLB Papaya Golden, non-GMO.

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thoughts on the Mango season in SoCal
« on: February 03, 2021, 06:48:20 PM »
Mango season is now winding down at my house in Long Beach.  I have about 10 Lemon Zest still hanging on a tree.  They are slowly ripening and I have been eating 2-3 per week.  They are very good but not great.  I like them a little under ripe when they have more of a citrus taste.  They do have fiber though.

My first mangos to ripen this year where Maha Chanok.  I had two batches of fruit off this tree.  An early batch and a later batch with some in between.  The early batch was not shaped like a normal Maha Chanok.  The fruit were shorter and thicker without the S shape.  These fruit were amazing!  Some of the best mangos I have ever had.  Truly delicious.  The later fruit that where shaped like a traditional Maha weren't nearly as good.  This variety does have a very long season even here in SoCal.

My Edward this year were average.  Nothing special.  The quality of the fruit from this variety really seams to vary from year to year in my yard.  A couple of years ago the fruit was excellent with a nice balance between classic mango taste and acid.  This year again they were bland.

The Fruit Punch this year were just OK.  It is a small tree and I probably shouldn't have even let it hold fruit.  But it is such a strong grower  that I figured it could grow 4-5 fruit.  Hopefully they will get better as the tree matures.

My Sweet Tart were excellent.  When eaten slightly under ripe they have a nice acid to sweet taste.  And I love the flavor by the skin.

My Ice Cream fruit didn't ripen properly this year.  They seem to stay under ripe on the tree and then go bad.  If I pick them under ripe to let them ripen on the counter they stay firm and don't ripen fully.  Hopefully next year will be different because when this variety is good it is excellent.

My Dot is growing after it almost Died.  This variety really struggles at my house.

My Cushman is also growing after it almost died.  It is now growing strong.

Here are some pictures of my last few Lemon Zest.  As you can see the tree is flushing now and has some 1.5"-2" fruit on it.  These will probably die and fall off.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about Calcutta Lychee
« on: March 12, 2020, 05:29:37 PM »
Hi all, I have read as much as I can find on this forum and on the internet about Calcutta Lychee.  It appears to be a very late variety that bears heavily with very good flavor.  I'm wondering why no one grows it?  Does anyone here know anything else about this variety?  Anyone know where I could buy one?

Thanks,
Bill

I went to Champa Nursery and talked to Jimmy the owner there.  He is very knowledgeable and helpful.  There nursery is very clean and well organized.  All plants are clearly labeled and they use different color spray paint on the pots to also identify the plants.  I felt safe that I wouldn't buy a mislabeled plant.  I bought a Kaimana and an Emperor lychee plant.  He only had one Emperor.  It was healthy but very small for a 15 gallon pot.  The plant is about 3.5' tall.  He only had two small 3 gallon Kaimana.  The one I bought is about 1.5' tall.  He buys his Kaimana from Hawaii so they should be the real deal.  I bought a Kaimana Lychee from California Tropical Fruit Trees several years ago.  But after a while I started doubting if what they grow as Kaimana is the real deal.  The fruit from their trees are small-medium is size and not dark red.  So I sold that tree.

I like Kaimana because it is early season, large fruit and a small tree.  I like the Emperor because it is late season, large fruit and a small tree.  Both of these should complement my Brewster.  Who here in California has fruited Kaimana?  What did the fruit look like?

I'll attach some pictures soon.

Hi all, I know there is a post about growing Luc's Garcinia around the world but I thought it would be a good idea to start a post about growing it in Southern California.  I figure it is common enough now that we can gather information specific to our location.  Information like growth, cold tolerance, heat tolerance, disease problems, fruiting characteristics etc. can vary from location to location.  Hopefully gathering information in one place will be useful.

I'll start by telling you guys my experience so far.  I obtained my one year old seedling in April of 2015.  If I remember correctly it was about six inches tall.  I grew it in a pot until spring of 2018 when I put it in the ground.  At that time it was about two feet tall.  That summer it had three growth flushes.  It grew to three feet tall and started to branch out laterally.  This summer it is always in a constant state of growth.  It doesn't have growth flushes where the whole plant grows at once, anymore.  It now is always growing somewhere on the plant but not all at once.  It is currently over 4.5' tall and sill growing strong.

My house is in Long Beach and I live about two miles from the beach.  Because of this I have mild summers and winters.  I have the Limoncillo planted in dappled shade with about two inches of mulch.  I fertilize it several times a summer.  The only disease problem I have had so far is scale attacking the new growth.

I'm hoping it will fruit at about 6-8 feet tall?  I really have no idea.

Here are some pictures.
