Title: PPK, orange sherbert, Pickering, Sugar loaf, buttercream, or coconut cream?
Post by: Das Bhut on April 06, 2019, 03:31:22 AM
I have two mango trees right now: honey kiss (very late) and orange essence which is a mid season. I'm looking for one of the newer varieties that fruits outside their season. The spot that the new tree would go in has no wind, absolutely no shade, and it's on a slight slope so it's always dry. With that said I'm just looking for more info on these

PPK 'lemon meringue'
pros: ripens in may/june, productive, disease resistant, easy to know when to pick
cons: tree shape and fruit is susceptible to bacterial black spot

orange sherbert
pros: great taste, vigorous
cons: jelly seed, uneven ripening

Pickering
pros: precocious, dwarf, disease resistant, early season mango

sugar loaf
pros: coconut flavor
cons: ?

butter cream
pros: highly rated flavor
cons: ugly fruit

coconut cream
pros: coconut flavor, good growth habit, vigorous, disease resistant, ripens in June/July
cons: shy bearer in some areas, easily damaged by wind

what are your experiences with these trees?

My pickering is my mass producer. It has fruited reliable past 3 years. And each year just makes more and more. It has also been very easy to maintain under 8 ft tall.  My Coconut Cream has been pruned to keep as small as possible so it may be effecting production, but has given a dozen to 20 fruit past 3 years. This year with lowest initial set at about 16 fruit holding at golf ball size right now. What I don't like about the CC is it grows straggly, throwing branches in all directions and several to the ground (mine at least but have heard similar accounts from others). My PPK has been hit or miss. This year it has more fruit than it has had in several years. Last year about a dozen fruit, year before none, year before that 30-40 fruit. Takes some work to prune to keep under 12 ft, One year it had bad jelly seed. But yes super easy to tell when ready to pick.

that's in line with most things I've read about pickering/CC/PPK but I'm not leaning towards those since I found more info on Sugar Loaf. Since it recently got a name and people called it a mix of e-4 e4 mounds and "e 4"  it's hard to find info on it but apparently it's an improved pina colada mango. Strong pineapple/coconut flavor and ripens june/early july, don't know anything about disease resistance or growth habit yet.

I think I'll take the chance on E-4 Sugar Loaf since I already have a citrus (OE) and traditional mango (HK) a coconut/pineapple mango would be a nice addition regardless of season. It'd be smart for me to try coconut cream and Sugar Loaf side by side to see which one I want though

Don't know why I didn't just call and ask tropical acres farms or some other place earlier.

Called up Tropical Acres with questions about sugar loaf/coconut cream and had them all answered.

What season is Sugar loaf? Mid season, coconut cream is earlier

Which is more vigorous? Coconut cream, seems sugar loaf is a slow grower

Which is more precocious? Coconut cream

Which is more disease resistant? They're both pretty clean trees

What is sugar loaf's growth habit? Spreading, but not similar to coconut cream

Which has more coconut flavor? Sugar loaf when ripe

So which are you planning to get?  Sugar Loaf and why?  I'm having similar dilemmas picking out here in hawaii.  Thanks!

if I didn't get sugar loaf I would've gotten an m-4

sugar loaf seems to be spreading and fairly disease resistant like a honey kiss, plus it's a green mango which will deter thieves a bit

Ok thanks, from your research did you find anything about sugar loaf production?
The taste is excellent, tastes like a pina colada, creamy and sweet.

Coconut Cream can over do it if too ripe

The coconut flavor taste is more chemical at that point

Very good flavor till that point
