Sugarloaf (E-4) vs. Piña Colada
« on: June 15, 2019, 01:11:33 PM »
Did I make a mistake planting Pina Colada instead of E-4?  Alex (Tropical Acres Farms) says: The flavor of Piña Colada is rich as syrup at the regular ripe stage, like a ‘Dot’ mango on steroids. At the riper stage, its namesake enters the flavor profile and it takes on those remarkable pineapple and coconut notes found in the frozen drink.

Of E-4 he says: On the underripe side the flavor is pineapple-esque, while on the ripe-er side is an incredible coconut explosion with a strong dessert-like sweetness.  We think it tastes like the inside of a Mounds candy bar.

Further he says of Pina Colada: Unfortunately they are highly anthracnose prone and tend to produce too many male flowers.  For these reasons, we do not recommend them for the deep interior.  Piña Colada is a mango best suited to be grown in close proximity to the ocean, where you might also enjoy one at the beach under the tropical sun.

Okay.  I live in close proximity to the ocean so I'm in the best location for Pina Colada.  Also, I think Dot, a parent of Pina Colada, is a great-tasting mango.  Forum Family, what do you think??

But I already planted the Pina Colada.  Maybe Alex or some other expert will comment.  (Fingers crossed.)

Pina colada is a really good mango aswell. Don't know if I could only choose one
There's always the option of multigrafting.

Also one thing to consider is that we sort of know what we're getting with Pina colada (for better or worse). Sugar loaf is still new so the jury is out on the rest of it's characteristics.

Pina Colada is outstanding. I don’t think Sugarloaf is better than it; they’re about on equal footing in terms of flavor.

What does the PC fruit look like?

I have a small plant that I thought was PC.  It has a fruit on it that has this point to it.  Almost like a beak.

It didn't look the the PC in the video linked to earlier.

First two pictures are of the fruit.  I am trying to show the pointed part.
The other 2 pictures show the leafs in case this helps ID the fruit.

Thanks.  I grafted lemon Zest at the same time.  It is one of the cases of faded label on my grafts.  I thought all but one of my LZ grafts failed.  Perhaps I have a spare after all.

I will label this branch "Maybe Lemon Zest", thanks.

So Far, I like Piña Colada more but I’ve only had a handful of E4s. I’ve never had E4 in the Coconut stage but I have had it in the sweet pineapple stage. Piña Colada is a flavor and sugar bomb. I’m a bit surprised to hear you report that it’s growing like gangbusters for you. Here in SoCal, it is a slow grower, at least for me. Piña Colada is a top mango.

I like Piña Colada so much that I planted out about 40 seeds and selected about 15 seedlings that are growing somewhat decent in SoCal. Many of the weaker seedlings were averse to the cold weather and were stunted, chlorotic and some of the seedlings also succumbed to anthracnose and the Black Death we get here in SoCal.

Ed, if a LZ you probably don’t need to protect it. Both the coconut cream and LZ I have hadn’t hand any interest from the birds or furry pest. I have plent around here and they do t touch them for some reason! Thanks God!

Like others have said - Pina Colada is an absolute flavor bomb.  Maybe too powerful for some.  Don’t eat it before a  milder mango, it can make a good mango taste weak.  One of my favorites.
