Obsessed with Fruit
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:51:46 PM »
Hi Everybody,

I am casting a show for TLC about people with unique collections or obsessions. I found this forum and wanted to get in touch with anybody who is obsessed or collects fruit to see if they'd be interested in sharing their story on our show. Hope to hear from some of you!

Thanks,
Colleen Goodhue

haha!

Colleen lucky you found this place!

email me at adamdanashafran@gmail.com for details.

I think she wants you to email her.

I also think that Harry or Squam should be on the show for their mango tree obsession. Lets make a poll, who's more obsessed, Harry or Squam?

I would say everyone on this forum is obsessed with fruit.  Hell...I only schedule vacations to tropical fruit growing countries and only when the fruit is in season.  All depends upon where you are and where you are willing to travel!!  We cover almost every state and around the globe!

You know you're obsessed when you have over 100 different cultivars of mango.

I'd have to hire a landscaping company to take out all the weeds though before it would be suitable for television. So I cast my vote to Harry  ;). Plus his trees are bigger and producing.

I would define degrees of pathological obsession in the following way:
Mild obsession: 20 mango trees or less
Moderate obsession: 20-50 mango trees
Advanced obsession: 50-100 mango trees
Ready for the luny farm: over 100 mango trees!  ;)

I think I have to vote for Harry, who was obsessed with mangos back when Squam was still just a twinkle in his father's eye. (poetic license, Harry)

On the other hand, judging strictly by comparing members' avatars, I'm clearly the most telegenic.....

Obsessed?  Who me?  You have to be kidding.  I could care less about fruits in general and mangoes specifically.  I am still puzzled as to how the whole lot of them mysteriously apppeared in my yard.  If TLC wants to treat this as an obsession with fruit, well.....so be it.  But I rather think of myself as victim of circumstances. Growing up in So. Florida and using over ripe mangoes to throw at my friends and enemies left me with bad mango karma.  I wouldn't eat them back then and I thought that they were only good as messy weapons.  Now I am trying to overcome the bad karma I had brought upon my younger ingnorant self and get back on even keel vis-a-vis the mango.  I figure I should be back to neutral on the karma good/bad scale within the next 15 or 20 trees.  If TLC thinks this karma clearing quest is of any interest or worthy of consideration in their programming, I am game.

What about us Californians who can't grow mangoes? Up here in the CRFG we have those with 600+ different apple cultivars. A person with ~200 different citrus cultivars. And of course here in California we have the enigmatic David Karp who, although I'm not sure if he is personally growing anything, is definitely invested in rare fruit and mega-obsessed with rare fruit.

I think that would correctly be spelled "loony" farm....and as long as it has mango trees growing, I am sure I would very much like to visit....maybe even stay for a while.

just my personal opinion, but I'd want to see a program about an older grower over the age of 60, who's spent over 30yrs collecting a wide range of species...rather than just hundreds of cultivars of the same species.  the senior growers deserve the spotlight, because they have less time left to personally share with us their legacy.

I think we're all obsessed in our own ways.  I have a smaller collection here than most and most of mine are too small to fruit yet.  But that's only because I had to import them to Iceland in suitcases   ;)

Anyone who gets on this show will joked about and ridiculed in order to make entertaining TV. Only participate if you want  to see yourself on TV and tell your family and friends to watch you.

I have to agree, this is not like that Documentary, "The Fruit Hunters" this is in her words:

about people with unique collections or obsessions

So its not about the love of fruits or to inform people about fruit growing, its about the people that collect them or are obsessed with them.

My guess is, if your not a real obsessed mango nut with mango trees growing from your bed, you probably wont make the cut.

Even if you are boring and sober as the day is long, through the magic of TV and selective editing they will make sure you come off as wacky and obsessed.
