Quiz: Can you guess my name 2?
« on: July 28, 2012, 07:27:47 PM »

I took the picture below a couple of days ago.

Can you guess the name of this fruit? It is edible.

No hints at this time. The family resemblance is quite obvious...

No, i went to the farmer's market.  8) Got to meet Rob, a new forum member also living in Hawaii.
Got some really nice white sapotes from Mike Moser's place. Yummy! I thought of you Harry because they were a bit bitter until i very carefully removed all traces of exterior green peel.
And also got some very bizarre looking chilis, maybe from Brazil? The name was something like Uba tuba. They look very bizarre, like little flying saucers. Maybe Berto knows them?

Oscar mild and hot 3 sided an 4 edged red ubas are in the market here all the time.I know I have seen the mystery plant with mulberry like big fruit and the juvenile fruit hairs.I just can't cut through the fog in the memory banks and pin it down.

Hmmm. I think we should leave to the Kiwis the naming of fruits for market appeal.

saifu that is such a hurtful thing to say.You do know why jesus wasn't born in NZ? I think it is a trick question the fruit is masquerading as cudrania triloba when it is really a maclura pomifera and all the fruit being obscured by foliage was part of the trick.

Hi Mike. You need to cut through the fog harder. It's neither Cudrania triloba nor Maclura pomifera. I said it is edible, meaning it is soft, sweet and even tasty...

I believe know one answer to your riddle. But, lets just say it's a bit off topic  ;D ;D ;D ;D

OK, the little light went on just now. It must be the giant yellow mulberry, Myrianthus holstii or M. arboreus, that Soren just sent seeds of? I've never seen the immature fruit but am just guessing that is what it is?

Give away hint: khaki pigment is made of this tree...

 Hi,

It is Chlorophora tinctoria, although I'm used the synonym: Maclura tinctoria.

This is known as taíuva in Brazil, and, apparently  ;D ;D ;D, "scrotum berry" in Oz.

As expected from a very minor fruit, it does well in the subtropics and laughs at poor alkaline soil.  ::) ::)
