grafted Myrciaria guaquiea

I'm starting this thread to track the progress of my grafted M. guaquiea trees.  I believe it is the first successful grafting of this species in the USA (maybe the world? I don't think it is ever grafted in Brazil)

as of last year I started taking scions from my friends, almost mature, M. guaquiea...I knew just what to do with them...as I have hundreds of M. glazioviana rootstocks.

As I assumed, glazioviana makes an excellent rootstock for M. guaquiea, just like M. strigipes. 

as time goes on i will be grafting more of these..and the strigipes...and the true glomerata...and possibly a larger fruited selection of M. glazioviana.

this species complex is worth collecting!

u know...I have very bad luck grafting artocarpus...(I've only had success once, and of course it was when I wasn't even worried about the grafts taking)

other than that, I've never grafted bananas and palm trees!

here is an updated photo of the two grafted Myrciaria guaquiea plants.

they did not seem to enjoy the intense heat in my greenhouse, and started to really perk up when I put them near a fan that kept them under 100F.

still the plant is extremely heat tolerant.

the graft unions are almost invisible.

the next photo I post will be of these plants blooming, maybe in 1-2yrs if all goes well.

Fantastic, get some grafted when it's fruiting so that I can buy one from you. Lol ... It's interesting, it grows in a specific habit that I find is different from other myrciaria. Mine looks just like yours, but it's a seedling I got from Ethan. It's one of my easiest plants to grow. It kind of sits there, doesn't take up much space, and keeps growing.

yes!  I plan to graft more ASAP...but that could take me a year or two.

that's cool u got a seedling, they don't take too long to fruit, it will probably be about 3-5 yrs from seed.

maximize sunlight, keep it somewhat rootbound, but happy (plenty of irrigation, regular feedings, but not too much nitrogen)...

that's how I encourage them to fruit quickly.

supposedly they are all similar...

i have only tasted strigipes and glazioviana so far...both are similar...but I have only tasted a few strigipes so far

how do they handle city water?  major ph issues?

I only use composted rain water, best you can get.

Probably similar to strigipes and  glazioviana ... Which are a little sensitive, but easily managable...(chelated Fe is always good to have around)...but I remember growing both on city water without having to drench...fertilizing was enough to perk up my plants

So far I think glomerata is the most sensitive out of the bunch...maybe that's why it's so darn rare!
