Tropical Fruit Discussion / What caused a hole in cherimoya trunk?
« on: May 16, 2017, 09:36:01 PM »
I picked up a Dream Cherimoya tree a few weeks ago.  It was just grafted, so I left the tape on until yesterday.  When I did, i noticed it had a small hole on the trunk under the grafting tape.  It looked like it's a small rotten spot.  There were a few small white mite-looking bugs crawling around that area.  Did I leave the tape on too long?  What caused this?  And what should I do now?

Citrus General Discussion / Winged Lime / NZL Info Needed
« on: May 04, 2017, 02:19:45 PM »
There doesn't seem to be very much info available for Winged Lime (aka Black Twig Lime).  What is the cold tolerance of Winged Lime?  How vigorous?  Season? etc.  I've read NZL is vigorous, but not sure about cold tolerance and season.

Millet was kind enough to share some budwood (Thanks again!) and I recently tried to graft a few trees.  But now I need to figure out where to put them and how to treat them.  Let me know if you guys have any info or recommendations.

Citrus General Discussion / Ponderosa Lemon vs NZL
« on: April 21, 2017, 08:51:59 PM »
Looking for ideas here...

I have a 7 gal ponderosa lemon tree that I picked up on sale a few months ago.  Wondering if it's worth keeping as ponderosa or should I just graft New Zealand Lemonade on to it?

Anything you can do with Ponderosa that you can't do with NZL?

Citrus General Discussion / Groves in Central Florida
« on: April 17, 2017, 07:48:13 PM »
I drove through Central Florida over the weekend passing a ton of groves.  It was strange to see some that were completely dead alternating with some groves that looked completely untouched (from the road passing at 55 mph).

Is the difference in pesticide usage and/or nutrient suplimentation?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 'Sweet Song' Lychee
« on: April 13, 2017, 09:40:54 PM »
Just picked up a 'Sweet Song' Lychee from Wayne Clinton's place along with a bunch of other cool plants.  He was super nice and talked plants with me for longer than he should have.

Anyone else growing this one or tried it?  I can't find anything online.

Citrus General Discussion / Plants from root cuttings
« on: April 05, 2017, 09:19:04 AM »
My Meyer lemon was in a pot and grew roots into the soil.  When I moved the pot to a new area, the root that stayed in the ground came up as a new plant.  The new plant is now about 12" tall.  Just noticed it is probably Meyer lemon as well, since the original plant doesn't look grafted.

My question is - how long does a plant from root cutting take to mature?

Citrus General Discussion / Importing budwood - IS NOT LEGAL IN USA
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:27:54 PM »
It looks like guys are getting bud wood from Australia for finger limes (ie. ozifingerlimes1 on ebay).  Do you need special permits or what?

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Looking for rare limes
« on: March 30, 2017, 08:20:19 AM »
Anyone know where I could find trees or cuttings of Blacktwig lime, Merdeka lime, and/or better cultivars for finger limes?  Seems like, for Australian FLs, I can only find generic "green finger limes".

Checked CCPP, but didn't see any of these for sale.

Citrus General Discussion / Dealing with Cold Damage
« on: March 23, 2017, 08:57:40 PM »
Well, we had a nice long warm period in January and February (high 70s and no freezes) followed by sudden hard freezes - three in a week.  Most of my plants had broken dormancy and flushed out, so I lost a lot of blooms and tender green growth in the freeze.  I threw some plastic sheeting over my trees, but I'm assuming they got too hot during the day, then cooled down too quickly at night, since a few trees had bark cracking on smaller braches.

Do you guys have any suggestions for helping my trees recover?   It's mostly fried leaves on top and some small twigs, nothing too serious.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inducing flowering and fruiting
« on: March 23, 2017, 12:42:56 PM »
Mango trees can be induced to flower with Potassium Nitrate sprays to produce off-season fruits.  Pineapples can be induced with Calcium carbide or other sources of ethylene.

Are their any other fruit plants that can be induced to flower/fruit?

It looks like one of the branches on my Cara Cara orange has become variegated in this new flush.

Citrus General Discussion / The best way to clear grass under trees
« on: February 12, 2017, 08:13:57 PM »
Most of my trees are planted in my yard and grass is creeping in on them.  What's the best way to get rid of the grass around them without hurting my expensive citrus trees?

Citrus General Discussion / Trees waking up, what now?
« on: January 22, 2017, 06:55:13 PM »
Most of the trees in my temporary greenhouse are starting to form leaves and flower buds.  What fertilizer and spray schedule do you use?

I've noticed some spider mites and those corky leaf spots I've posted about before (maybe greasy spot and something else?).  Not sure, but I'd like to be better about spraying this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion Fruit All Year?
« on: January 22, 2017, 06:48:59 PM »
Are there any passion fruit that produce all-year?

I've been enjoying my first crop of Possum Purple more than I thought I would.  Pretty sure it only fruits once a year (in the fall), so I'd like to add other varieties to fill in throughout the year.

Any suggestions?

Citrus General Discussion / Off-season Valencia Oranges
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:55:20 PM »
So my Valencia orange bloomed off-season a couple of times and set some fruit.  I had some from Summer 2015, Winter 2015 and a regular bloom in Spring 2016.

Some of the fruit have been hanging for 18 months and are very large, but they have not colored up completely.  They still have a little green on the peel.  Should I wait until the Summer to pick them or just pick them as they size up?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lara's Passionfruit? - SOLVED!
« on: December 29, 2016, 08:18:41 AM »
I bought a passionfruit vine from Lara in Homestead last Summer.  It wasn't labeled and my Spanish is not great.  I thought they said it was "yellow" passionfruit, but it recently fruited and the fruits are turning purple.  They are slightly larger than ping-pong balls.  Any ideas what variety they carry?  The flowers looked like flavicarpa to me, but I don't have much experience with passiflora.

Citrus General Discussion / Corky leaf spots?
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:15:06 PM »

Just noticed these on my King tangerine.  These raised corky lesions are only on a few of the top leaves on one branch.  What do you think?  Citrus scab?  Treat with copper?

Citrus General Discussion / Improving drainage for citrus
« on: January 04, 2016, 10:46:34 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how to improve drainage at my new house, so I can plant a bunch of fruit trees.  There is a small stream nearby and the water table is only 2 1/2 to 3 feet down.  When it rains, the water just sits in puddles on the surface for a few days.  I thought the soil would improve by adding a lot of compost, but it still drains poorly.

I read adding gypsum would help with clay soils, but I'm not sure.  Any suggestions before I build raised beds?

Citrus General Discussion / Yellow vein/green leaves?
« on: December 12, 2015, 07:02:45 PM »

My Satsuma has had a few leaves like this for a while, but recently a lot have turned like this.  The central vein turns yellow, while the rest of the leaf is green.  Then the yellow spreads outward and the leaf drops.  I was thinking just Nitrogen deficiency, so I just sprayed with fish emulsion.  Could it be something else?

Over the Summer, I had a pretty bad spider mite problem.  I thought that might be why the leaves are mostly smaller, cupped and pointed upward.  Could this causing the vein yellowing now?

Only things I sprayed in the past have been dormant oil, micro nutrient spray and fish emulsion.

Citrus General Discussion / Thinning Fruitlets
« on: November 30, 2015, 03:59:31 PM »
My Valencia orange is covered in fruitlets just dropping the flower petals.  I've read that I need to thin the fruitlets about now to prevent alternate bearing.  But how much to thin?  50%?  75%?  More?

Do you pick off the smaller ones or the larger ones that are a little older?

What do you guys do to prevent alternate bearing?

I heard this on NPR at work the other day.  It's about 4 minutes long.  Towards the end, a researcher claims good results discouraging Asian Psyllids from his trees using reflective metalized mulch.  He also claims 50% more growth on his trees.

Citrus General Discussion / greening resistant citrus from UF

Genetically modified trees symptom free after 3 years surrounded by infected trees.  They used genes from a mustard plant.

Citrus General Discussion / citrus borers - now what?
« on: November 20, 2015, 09:12:09 AM »

I have a small Glen navel orange tree with some kind of boring insect.  There are two holes pretty close together with curly strands of sap coming out.  What should I do?

Citrus General Discussion / Using Grow Lights during Winter
« on: October 28, 2015, 12:11:54 PM »
Is anybody using grow lights on their container citrus over the winter?

How do you know what size lights to use?  Or what type?  It seems like there are a dizzying array of sizes, types, and prices.  I can apparently spend $5 on a LED screw-in light bulb all the way up to $1,500 on a big LED lamp that hangs from the ceiling.  There are also Metal Halide (MH) bulbs and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulbs.  Is there a good source of info on this for use on citrus plants?

Instead of putting my plants in the ground this Fall, I am thinking about keeping them potted and indoors at my shop near the windows with grow lights (and heaters) over the Winter.  Would this would help them add some size before the Spring?  My new plants from Harris and Four Winds are really tiny.
