I'm wondering why people aren't trying to grow them as cuttings. Supposedly most of them take from cuttings?

This is interesting Oscar, I might try it, Do you have any cuttings available?

I think this depends on species and location. More tropical rain foresty trees will appreciate closer planting in dryer/hotter places. If you look at growers in Arizona for example, they can have good success growing tree very close to each other to help create shade and rise up humidity. However, I believe that some trees just doesn't like being shaded at all, so I'd allow more roam for those.

What would you say is a better tasting variety ?

This is a quote from the forum member KarenRei few months ago:

I. cinnamomea:
""nice cinnamon taste""
""Pennington calls this one of the best tasting ingas. I have a couple trees but not fruiting yet, but getting close, i hope!"" ""Yes Oscar, this is one of the best flavored Ingas,  may be the best, and probably the one with more flesh to eat. I really like it.""
""Cinnammomea is often rated as one of the better tasting ones. The ones i've had so far on the cinnamomea the pulp clings to the seed. In other ingas the pulp is non cling.""
""My favorite inga is the cinnamomea, pulpy, very sweet, and more damage flies resistant ""
""heavily scented flowers""

I. edulis:
""That is one of the most mislabeled trees I have seen. Every Inga tree is generically slapped with the edulis tag it seems"" [Florida]
""The Inga edulis seems to be a weak grower from me. The Inga vera is a beast."" [Florida]
Rusty's Market (įstralķa, kannski Cairns) - ""Inga edulis well over 5 ft and very thick but still young and firm"" ""Oscar's beans look so much smaller""
""Oscar: ""I like spectabilis most just because of mere quantity, they are huge pods with very big chunks around each seed, second would be feuillei, and third would be edulis""
""So which of the three taste the best and sweetest?"" ""Out of the ones I have tasted, Inga edulis is my favorite. The pods are super long and the pulp is very moist and sweet.""
""I've barely had my ice cream bean for a year and it's already over 6 ft.""
""According to Ducke (1949:33) there are two varieties of Inga edulis in existence, parvifolia and typica. The second variety, which is the one described here is the real ""inga-cipo"", with relatively large flowers and very long, thick fruits, which apparently only occur near settlements where it is intensively cultivated. It is one of the most popular fruit trees in the entire region
Frębelgir: aš 100sm. ""Best forms are in S. America"""

I. feiuilleei:
Actually like ice cream, according to Weird Fruit Explorer, though I. edulis said to be somewhat of a better fruit. Vs. I. vulpina: ""Feuillei is more vigorous.""
""Inga feuillei grows like weeds in a large pot for me. My seed-grown trees are less than 1 year in age and are 6+ ft tall.""
Oscar: ""I like spectabilis most just because of mere quantity, they are huge pods with very big chunks around each seed, second would be feuillei, and third would be edulis""
""The largest of the two is around 1.5 years from seed at 7ft. I have them growing in 18"" pots.""
""It has grown more than 2m in a 3l pot, now is in the ground, and more than 3m and branching nicely. It is +- 18 months.""
Frębelgir: ""long"""

I. laurina:
"""What kind of Inga could this be ? Small , 10 to 12 cm , very juice and great flavor . Huge producer"" ... ""I was really thrilled when I tasted this one , far superior in taste than all the others I have tasted so far ."" ... ""Has been identified as Inga laurina.""

I. paterno:
"""it is tedious and you don't get a lot of flesh for the effort. ""
Cotyledons ""blanched, then salted and used in salads or desserts"""

I. spectabilis:
Not as good according to Weird Fruit Explorer (vs. I. edulis: ""a little dry, a little mealy... maybe a little weaker, and not as sweet... Inferior.  Sorry, Colombia...."")
But according to Oscar: ""I am growing ... edulis, vulpina, gauchil, fastuosa, cinnamomea, feuillei, spectabilis. ... Right now i'm kind of especially fond of spectabilis, mostly because it is very large and has lots of good pulp. ...  I like spectabilis most just because of mere quantity, they are huge pods with very big chunks around each seed, second would be feuillei, and third would be edulis ... taste is really great""
"" 2-3 years old now but I only planted it in the ground about 9 months ago.  It's probably 3.5 feet tall, but it's quite wide -- maybe 5 feet in diameter.""
""Natural tendency of this tree is to form big umbrella shape. Just keep shortening the shoots that go horizontally, and eventually you will get upward growth"" ""Branches from fairly low down""
Frębelgir: 30-70x8x3sm ""usually containing only scant pulp"" (ha? Svo hvaš um I. spectabilis hjį Oscari?)"

I. striata:
Said to possibly be a subspecies of I. edulis, but: ""That is definitely not Inga edulis, nothing like it. It's probably not feuillei either""
Frębelgir: 18x3sm. ""The flowers of this tree are about the size of apples. The leaves are dark green and at biggest the size of a small mountain papaya.""
Rjómaķsbragš, meira vanilla-bragš en E. edulis en ekki eins sętt.
""I personally like this ice cream bean the best out of every ice cream bean I have eaten. The pulp was a lot less fibrous than the common ice cream bean, melting in the mouth like a sugar cube.""
""Early bearing"" žżšir ekki precocious, heldur er uppskerutķminn nóv-feb heldur en mar-jśl."

I. vulpina:
"""Feuillei is more vigorous.""
""The Inga vulpina is a lot slower grower (3-4x) than all the other species of inga i have, probably because vulpina is considered dwarf compered to other species.""
""pods are very small compared to other species.""
Frębelgir: aš 6x3sm."

All Thanks for KarenRei.

sure, send me your info. I will have the next batch pick in a few weeks.

I like this variety of june plum because it is not fibrous at all.  Some of them don't even seems to have seeds.
As you can see here, the seeds are very small, i put it on a quarter to compare.  Those are the largest seeds I can find out of the fruits that are the size of a golf ball.

My sister got some fruits that are about the size of a tennis ball. They are very fibrous.  I planted the seeds last year and it is growing. Hopefully, I will get some fruits from it soon as well.

I think most of my peach and nectarines are on citation.  Which seems to work fine here.

Yep, every rootstock is site dependent. Citation works good in many places in CA and in some places around Phoenix (yards that have flood irrigation in particular) but every tree on Citation in my yard has died. Neemagaurd has not fared much better. But trees on Myro and Marianna do great in my yard.

Is myrobalan and Myro the same thing? If so I think myrobalan is grown from seed which be very exciting for me.
Is Myro compatable with Peachs? or just plums?

Yep. Myro=myrobalan. I have seen peach trees grafted onto Myro. Buy my best peach trees and peach interspecifics (like Bella Gold Peacotum) are on Lovell Peach rootstock. That is anoth combo that does well in my yard.

Brad, sorry for hijacking your post.

OMG Brad yes we are sorry lol.

I'll order some Lovell seeds and experiment with them then. It has proven to be almost impossible to get hold of Hansen rootstock. RSI growers in Arizona ( https://rsigrowers.com/index.html) claim that Hansen rootstock is really tolerant of salt and high calcium carbonate (relative to other peach rootstocks) and you can except higher yields using that rootstock in Arizona.

Brad,
We are sorry again.

They have good flavor when pick some of them in Nov-Dec.  But in Jan, they seem to be a bit blend.
I picked my june plum at the same time, and june plum is much better tasting then guava.  I prefer june plume over guava.

I would like to purchase some June Plum seeds from you if you are welling.

These don't come true to seed.  They are all pollinating each other and all the trees are on special rootstocks.

Anyway, sale is done.  I trimmed the trees yesterday and am looking forward to some fruit soon.

Which rootstocks are they on? I have ordered two Florida Prince peaches bareroot on Nemaguard which is a better rootstock for dry weather. Our water is saly and soil is Alkaline.

I read that peaches hate salt and are sensitive to it, so I'm currently looking for a source of the Hansen 536 rootstock which is known to be more salt tolerant and is also more tolerant of alkaline soils.

Do you have UF Best?

I'm interested in apricots as well but I'm not sure if there is a low chill apricot that would fruit in the same areas as Florida Prince Peach.

We have three varieties of this fruit where I live and it is popular in backyard cultivation for its fruits. You will find the fruit being sold occasionally in the fruit markets or on the streets.

The three varieties that we have are as follows:

1. Hassawi: Maroon/Red from the outside and maroon from the inside, very fibrous. Has a sweet fruity flavor with slight sourness and is reminiscent of almonds. (see my profile picture)
2. Alexsandrani: Yellowish green from the outside and red from the outside, less fibers. The favor is more acidic than the Hasawi but also more complex and fruity but with defiant nuttiness.
3. Eastern: I have not tried this variety yet.

Consumption of the fruit has become less common nowadays probably due to the damn fruit flies.

Probably hard to see but I've been trying to get this to germinate for a while now... friday moved it to a window that gets full sun in the mornings instead of a window in my house that is tinted...and Bam! Germination!

You couldn't get them to germinate, now your gonna have 10,000 :)
Hopefully I have success with the yellow too....then I won't mind 10,000. :D

Do you think a strong grow light will work as well as sunlight?
Should work if you put the seeds in close to the light.

I'll put them under my 1500 watt grow light then  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: I need more guavas in my life.
« on: September 05, 2018, 03:19:20 AM »
I like the smell of guava, it's very tropical and intoxicating, but even though I've tried to like it, I just don't really like eating the fruit. It's either too hard and astringent if not ripe enough, or when it is fully ripe it starts taking on a more putrid smell that is just somewhat offputting to me.

But if something like a Reisling varietal wine is said to take on the flavor of guava, that's a very positive thing. The fragrance is almost floral and edible at the same time.

Have you tried Egyptian Guava? I have been eating it pretty much exclusively all my life. It's never astringent, has an amazing smell, and sweet when soft. Also, it makes an amazing juiceز

A popular recipe is Egyptian Guava with milk and sugar, with some people adding dates instead of the sugar (best to use special variety of dates called Sukkari or Sugar dates).
