Nearly had a heart attack with one that I did that to with well meaning  overzealous "help" it comes back perfectly though:)

Some of the most skilled gardeners iv ever seen have grown weed and they weren't drug dealers! Incredible multifaceted plant cannabis sativa in my humble opinion:p

I can understand what you mean though plantlover trying to talk about my favorite hybrid tea roses to other guys my age hasnt usually been a conversation starter but as I get older I find more and more realise how profoundly useful and beautiful plants are! We just have a jump start on them!

Sorry if that wasn't clear I mean no rooting hormone needed to root very large cuttings just shove them in the soil.
Thanks a lot for your answers...
it's for Oleifera species...
@stuartdaly88 : when you mention hormone, do you talk about culture of azospirillum ? Because I want fully organic cultures but dont know if these bacteria are "natural"

Nice seedling Osito:D the hardest part is waiting for the seedcoat to come off, it seems to take forever!
Is Cherimoya generally the most vigorous annona? My seedlings(2month Old) grow significantly slower than same age rollinia but they seem quite susceptible to overwatering so maybe that accounts for slow growth? I'm very  new to annona so don't really know what is considered fast or slow :P

I'm abit nervous to use things like sulfur not to mention finding a source.
Are used coffee grounds any good for reliably raising acidity comparable to other methods or does brewing take out the acidity? If it is should you use it measured and sparingly or libraly?
My roses love coffee grounds but haven't used on any tropicals yet.
Would a pine needle mulch raise acidity similar to bark? Iv heard pine is acidic but I don't know how healthy this would be since nothing grows under the pine or eucalyptus here(I'm sure there's a term for that but can't recall it)

Over caring for my plants and smothering them to death with too much love lol. Especially trying fertilise too much too early just because of impatiently wanting them to speed up growth:( over potting has also been a frequent mistake and only buying a moisture metre has tamed my rampant over watering tendencies.

1157
Most tropicals iv grown or read up on  prefer a more acid soil but every plants needs are slightly different I think it's best to look up the needs of each specific plant if you want them to thrive :)

Oleifera is super easy to sprout and grows fast just can't stand cold wet feet. There is so much info online if you Google it I remember even finding fertiliser regimines, optimum  spacing, nutrition profiles of it grown in different areas etc Google scholar also has a fair bit.
. I did my varsity business research assignment on the socio economic potential of moringa in S.A and everything you could want to know is very easily accessible online even YouTube has countless cultivation videos. They grow very easily from large woody cuttings too no hormone used even.
Here's a site with irrigation and spacing info think there may be links to studies and papers too:)

Have access to unlimited S.pungens seeds and just got a few of what I have yet to properly identify but am fairly sure is S.spinosa.

« on: March 30, 2014, 04:32:04 PM »
Trying to find a resource to help identify what I think may be monkey orange. I collected some unripe fruits while in coastal kzn in South africa but the seeds are developed enough to grow. I did not see the tree as they were blown off in a storm so all I have is the seeds and fruit to use for identification for now. I'm abit dubious after reading it's related to nux vomica and don't want to misidentify

Is it possible to fruit acai in a large pot? I have wanted to grow this but the palms look extremely tall. I came across dwarf seeds but they  were prohibitively expensive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangosteen scam
« on: March 25, 2014, 03:14:15 AM »
Coincidentally I ordered seeds from this seller before reading this thread! I questioned the seller and said that I found it hard to believe that the tree will fruit from seed in 18months , the seller claims that it will fruit very small and lightly but will increase every year. The seeds were still cheaper for me to obtain than any other mangosteen sources(mostly due to free shipping) so I didn't see a downside. So I ordered both the claimed "dwarf" and run of the mill mangosteen seeds from them. If they survive transit I can do a side by side comparison grow and see if the growth habits are any different.
If there is any truth to the dwarfing I wanted to try a plant in a small aquaponics system I just need tilapa for. The consensus seems to be that this may be a scam/misinformed seller but.I will be happy even to have any mangosteen plant fruiting or not!

Wow ishani that quite the collection you must have alot of space and live somewhere tropical I'm jealous! Would love to see some pics:)

Buddy I'm going to have to get more schisandra I tried to stratify it in the fridge with ginseng but no luck germinating.
Alibizia is beautiful have you found it to calm the shen/spirit as I have read? I wish brahmi could grow well from seeds the Ayurvedic cognition enhancers are extremely interesting with promising scientific backing, iv found Celestrus seeds work well at exam time iv had a brahmi extract I found gave me focus.

I currently grow ashwagandha, holy basil/tulsi goji, malabar nut, turmeric, ginger and gotu-kola also have seedlings for fo ti, Amla, Longan, astragalus but had no luck with gynostema seeds. I cycle using extracts of various tonic herbs especially in stressful or contemplative times.
I also grow many S.A indigenous herbals used by the bushman/San and various tribes such as sutherlandia, sceletium  tortuosum, wild dagga, African potatoe, Marula tree and baobab tree and cannot wait to try unprocessed baobab

Do you know where I could get seeds for the related species Morinda officinalis (Ba ji Tian)

Are the seeds recalcitrant?

Are they?
Has great bearing on whether i buy.
I do buy recalcitrant but am very selective as its a 50/50 chance of survival for me.

1167
Wow really strange and beautiful! Iv seen pics of dry pods before but  I had no idea the pods were such a striking red and so large to go with the strange shape when on the tree!

Thank you very much Oscar:D
I hope to spread them as far as I can here and intend to also plant at my families more tropical coastal home.
Litchi and mangos are as exotic as it gets here so hopefully I can start a fruit revolution! Since I got such good germination rates I have offered some of my spares to any friends I trust to care for them I'm just glad I'm still young enough to take the journey from seed to fruit with these magnificent plants:D but there's alot more on the fruitlovers list that I "need" ha ha

Great tip on the green mulberries to remove the stain!

The white mulberry is nice but I find has a shorter perfect ripeness period and is much more subtle where black mulberry has more acidity. White mulberry is very nice dry as part of a nut mix though:) apparently white mulberry is the fastest known organism very interesting!

Hi Jordan
That's a very nice collection you have going there:)
I would love to try some of the exotic passionfruits it's great that their flowers are so pretty too! I'm also very jealous of your kepel I wonder if there's any truth about its fruits making your sweat smell good? Probably not but interesting lore nonetheless:)
May I ask what TCM and Ayurvedic plants you grow/take? It's rare to find a westerner who takes and grows such things although jujube goji and Longan are widely grown for fruit not medicine but and are some of the 50 fundamental/superior herbs of TCM. I have tried many times to germinate schisandra berry but have never been good with  stratification.

This forum is a great place I only just joined but.have been getting info here for ages!  Oscar is not just a sage of fruit wisdom but also provides an awesome range of fruit seeds of very high quality. My slow mail took well over a month but nearly all my seeds survived I got 100% germination on rollinia and Starfruit even! A saviour for us third world.country folks ha ha. I must thank you Oscar as I would only have dreamed of growing such things otherwise:)

We have several mulberry trees and a huge white mulberry and the birds do love them! My feet and hands are stained bright purple when they are in fruit. On the plus side when the birds start eating they spread like wild fire and they grow fast one of the most prolific "weeds" in my garden and they produce so much the trees literally are covered in berries even.the floor below gets covered very messy! And bird who eat them have a purple staining dropping!

I got seeds from silverhillseeds.co
za. I think they are wild harvested. Some germinated within months others next season still others the season after. Beautiful fleshy foliage. The fruits I buy here are very tasty but the skin is a bitter interesting flavour. iv even read of the skin used as a coffee substitute. Amarula a liquor made from it, is the best cream liquor iv ever tasted.

Heat Tolerance and Sun Exposure
Jaboticaba trees need afternoon shade. Other than that they take the heat well.

http://www.phoenixtropicals.com/jaboticaba.html

I had the same problem before with my jaboticaba and it was from over watering. It seems jaboticaba is very prone to root rot in the sandy soil so, try to lower the water intake.

That makes sense I have been pedantic about not letting them dry out and wasn't worrying about overwatering!! Thank you for the advice Evilfruit:)

I seem to have the same problem with one seedling it's like the shoot dries out but my Temps and humidity are fairly constant in a small cfl germination and seedling setup. The seedlings that did get further are about 3months old and they keep "tipping" themselves in that the top shoot dies and it sends out two. I'm not sure if this.is the best growth habit for Jaboticaba or why they would.do this? I was planning on letting them get more trunk length before they branched out.
