There was (is?) a fruiting chempedak in the Whitman pavilion at Fairchild’s. I saw it fruiting a few years ago.

Thanks. I don't know how I missed that one.

Most chempadek are really delicate and fussy, even here in Hawaii. But there is so much variation that i think one could be found that is as hardy as jackfruit. Just need to keep trying with different types from different sources.

That is the plan Oscar. The initial problem is a very weak root system that leads to damping off. There is likely some sort of microbiome that allow these to thrive early on within their native habitat. I believe I have solved that issue but time will tell. The next step will be finding minimum damage temps next winter.

Josh, for now and till we find the right variety , this is the only solution ( approach grafted to Jack ---your pic ) On the other side where we are in Mexico , same 20 some degrees north as you guys , my experience is the sooner you put it in the ground the better , that is before it starts to decline ( from seeds at about 20 - 30 cm  ) before realizing this it cost me probably more than 200 seeds . Right now I have one 100 % chempedak  ( collected in Malaysia )  , not really struggling , but not growing like any other Artocarpus I have , that put out a male ' flower ' . Raul who is at sea-level had a few more and I hope this year is gonna be the year we can announce / show a pic of us eating my second favorite fruit .

I am sure our South Asian friends will be laughing their A... off reading this .....

Great job Josh! I wish I had know about the Chempadak problems before I ordered seeds from Malaysia. I have plenty of jack seeds/seedlings I could have approached. Damnit. Maybe next time. Congrats. Hope they pull through for you. Chris
