Adam had these available last year. You might want to check out his store at www.FlyingFoxFruits.com. At one point, they were all sold out so you may want to pm Adam to see if any are available.

Bronzing of White Jade Pineapple
« Reply #51 on: August 10, 2014, 04:43:06 PM »
The leaves on my White Jades do not look very green lately.  Is this normal?

They have had all day sun and frequent rains, no fertilizer for the last month (until yesterday).

Is it time to re-pot them?   Or would they better off in my sandy soil, which does have a bit of organic matter in it?

those plants look nice.

maybe a little yellow...have u fed them at all?

I always like to play it safe and keep them in pots until they get more established...

although they can take full sun, I always like to give them a bit of shade...they just seem to look prettier when they're juvenile.

I'm not really an experienced pineapple grower, so my advice is a bit anecdotal.

i just received five nice looking white jades from adam this morning (bare root for shipping).  they are now settling into their new homes.

as a bonus, there were two live earthworms nestled in the roots of one of them!

thanx, adam!

Simon,
I looked at Adam's website, it states no shipping to CA. How were you able to get the pineapple plants to San Diego? I didn't see pineapples listed on the plant list either.
Thanks,

I can only ship certain plants to Ca!

in this case the plants were sterile and tissue cultured....so it's easy to send them with the proper paper work!

Your plants look OK. Those look like 3 gallon pots. That is all the space any pineapple roots need. With MD-2 you can use 2 gallon pots. I grow them well in sandy soil with a little organic matter present. Fertilize monthly with lots of N and K until the weather cools. The way to really grow large pineapples is through monthly foliar feeding. That is how it is done commercially. I've posted about the foliar feeding before.

Those babes are in some serious need of N and perhaps micros.

I have neglected the white jades as usual, but this year looks like the fruit will be larger...still in a 3 gal pot, for over 1yr....hasn't been fertilzed for a good 6months, but I recently gave it a handful of Holly-Tone.

did I hear someone say that you should harvest pineapples before they turn yellow/orange?  Last year I waited for the fruit to turn orange before harvesting..i wonder if this had an effect on the flesh color (which was yellow, not white)

in the pics posted on this thread, there have been zero slips seen.  does this variety produce slips?  suckets?  ratoons?    adam, you have had one ripen, did you get any kind of pups?

The plant that fruited last year was given to my brother, I believe it did produce suckers...the plant that is fruiting this year, didn't fruit last year, but is from the same generation (planted about 3 yr ago)...they have really been neglected!

To be honest, I haven't personally got pups yet, but haven't really had them long enough

I can rectify this situation. 5 slips and 2 suckers so far on this one.

looks like your fruit is going to be even bigger than mine.

nice pic!

I can't wait to see what you do with the sweet stripes! (that is the most beautiful pineapple I've seen in person...I wonder what it tastes like?  they are all related to sugarloaf...one of my favorite pineapples to begin with)

the fruit on my white jade is really getting to be decent sized...I'm surprised because it's been in the same 3 gal pot for about 3yrs now! and I barely fertilize!

does anyone know when you are supposed to harvest (or how to harvest) a pineapple?

last time I waited for the whole thing to turn orange...but some other folks told me to pick it early?

can we get a debate going or what?  :P

You can pick the pineapple when it starts to turn yellow and continue ripening process indoors. Ofcourse the longer you leave it on the plant, the sweeter it will get. Early harvesting helps to protect them from pest damage....mostly rodents.

Strong smell is what also strongly attracts rodents. So just watch out for that.

I thought that pineapples only ripen on plant and truly don't ripen up off of plant only start to decay!  :)
