Tastes like fresh squeezed orange juice with a passionflower tang, very sweet! Fruits are 4 to 6 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide. Just cut open top and drink, comes with its own cup (the fruit itself)! One year from seed to fruit.  Fruiting period from spring to early summer here in southwest Florida. Fruits before lychees and mangos to extend your season. Must be pollinated by a separate plant. Blooms are fragrant and pleasant.

$5 for 10 seeds plus shipping

Do you mean 2 P. alatas must be planted for pollination, or just another type of passiflora?  Thanks.

I have only pollinated it with another P. alata. Dunno about other species

Do you get any fruit without hand pollination?

I've had two experiences with this. My friend, who I got my seeds from last year had 2 or 3 vines climbing to the top of a lychee tree were not hand pollinated and produced prodigiously. Then mine, which are sprawled across a long fence, don't seem to produce well without hand pollination. Go figure. It may be that his were close together at the top of a tree lending easier pollination by an insect and mine are far apart.  Nevertheless it will produce better and bigger with hand pollination.

I believe Berto is growing this, and Bender also.  I was not aware that 2 were needed though.  Maybe they can chime in.

I also believe cross-pollination is required; and hand pollinated gives a much higher yield. But of course it depends on the natural pollinators in your area - here the sunbrids make a hole in the side of the flower and steals the nectar without pollinating the flower.

The alata and newly planted Nam Wah bananas get plenty of water and fertilizer from the neighbors' lawn irrigation. Hehe ;)

Are they as sweet as the purple Fredricks passionfruit? I've never had the Yellow before. Does it taste similar to Lillikoi? Thanks,
Simon

It's much sweeter than yellow passionfruit. I've never has Fredricks passionfruit. It has about the same sweet/tart ratio as fresh squeezed orange juice. It is quite sweet and a great fresh eating fruit no processing required. I can eat them till I get sick.

This was obtained at the PBCRFC's sale a couple weeks ago.  Was not provided with species type.  They were mildly sweet with a mild flavor.   Can anybody confirm if it is P. alata?

Crosses with P.quadrangularis are variable but this one looks rather like a hybrid I have seen before.P.alata is closer to the giant granadilla than you might think.

We grow quadrangularis here so i know what that is.  The fruit in the picture i posted was only about 3" long, not fragrant and had a outer shell more like edulis.

OK could be pure alata then BS as the crosses are bigger fruited, with thicker rind and the fruit are more eelongated I have seen alata that are quite round to lemon shaped.

Mine are looking the same as the above; there must be some variation in the shape.

This is now the second time I've read through this thread and debated ordering seeds.  Reason is I have tried the quadrangularis before and it tasted... fine.  Yes it was sweet.  But did not have a tart component to it.  I got bored eating it halfway through and didn't want to eat the rest.   Yellow lilikoi here in Hawaii is super tart and also delicious.  But It would be nice to find a happy medium between the two.

Is the alata very similar in taste to the quadrangularis?
With 3 acres of prime real estate for growing tropicals... why not create my own garden of eden?? Work in progress

I have a Sweet Lilikoi selection I got from someone in Hawaii -- it has a nice sweet/tart balance.  I bet if you ask around you will be able to find some local folks who have sweeter selections.
