My question is what do you already have in prime spots?

Maybe a Sapote... Mammey, Green, or Ross. You already have Annona sp.?
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I vote for Maha.

You can buy mamey at produce stands, but where can you get your hands on a Maha when you need one?

I have a number of mango trees, 9 trees. ( but you can never have too many mangoes in my opinion)

I have an Avocado, Sapodilla, Longan, Peach, Ross Sapote, Pitomba and a bunch of assorted small things . I have a pathetic poorly growing atemoya in the ground which is going to be replaced with another in its spot .

I do have a tiny Pantin Mammey Sapote in the ground but its not in a great spot and it hasnt grown very well- and its years away from fruiting and Mammey is one of the best fruits

Based on what you have, mamey or mango.  Mamey from produce stand?  In South Miami-Dade or Benders maybe but not in Palm Beach County.

Get another Atemoya if the one you have isn't growing well...maybe it's a rootstock issue...

As much as Pace can be precocious, if Nat goes with a more mature specimen (as she stated), or in any event, I would go with Lorito, Excalibur or Cepeda Especial.  Texture and flavor are far superior.

My vote is for the Maha, you can't buy the fruit and you'll never get tired of eating it. Mamey is kind of like avocado to me in that even if excellent how many of them can you really eat day after day?

I would go with the mammea americana but I am not sure since it is a seedling and the fruit quality may not be as good. The jabo or vexator will be much smaller so those can be planted almost anywhere, even below a tall tree like a mango or mammea.

Rob, the produce market on Lake Worth Rd, just west of Congress, does sell Mamey at times through the year.

I have no idea if they are Florida-grown, but I used to buy them for a neighbor.

Yeah, which is probably no different than what you can buy in Whole Foods or at the Boys or Rorabecks.  That is not what I would consider "home grown" quality.  I have had commercially grown mamey from homestead; fruit quality varies and is not great and who knows what variety it is.  I would much rather be able to go out to the tree and pick each fruit when needed and when optimally ready.

Im not sure how big a potted mamey is considered fruiting size, or should I say , how small.

Maya Chanok is now a close second....and it may replace  the Pickering.....

It's tough living on acre with a hubby who Limits  your fruit trees....

About 5 years old or so.  Pantin and Excalibur may need an extra year or so.  A large/old 15 gal or 25 gal should get you in the fruiting age or ver near to fruiting age.

get a jaboticaba....maybe a  Hybrid (red jaboticaba).

these can fruit almost year round, and stay small.  Very pretty tree...will even fruit in some shade!

Bender's grove might have some nice ones!!!

I have some nice ones here in Central FL as well....but I'm saving the largest ones for the sale this month for the Manatee County Rare Fruit Council!!

If your mamey is a grafted pace, then that would be my choice. You guys up in the palm beach area have sand and can actually grow and fruit the mamey, and the pace mamey is heavenly. To me it tastes just like caramel. The other benefit is that it fruits in the early spring (march - may?), so you get fruit when there's nothing else to eat.

The mamey america seedling will likely take forever to flower, and if you're unlucky, you'll get a male tree. Mamey americana is a fantastic fruit (like a top of the line apricot), but I'd plant a grafted tree vs a seedling. Also, they tend to bear during mango season, which means fruit overload. There are some cultivars that bear twice a year, but they are currently unproven in FL (I"m in the process of testing one).

Maha ... I guess lots of folks like it. To me it was bland... ? Maybe you should try one first. Personally I see it in the same light as a glenn in terms of flavor. Some like that subtle, watered-down flavor. Others don't.

Jaboticaba is great. It bears during the spring and fall, but it does like lots of water. It stays compact and can be grown underneath some of your bigger trees if needed.

Vexator is inferior to jabo in my opinion. Decent flavor, big seed, little bit of that eugenia / piney flavor. Stunning landscape specimen though that can be grown in tight spaces and under bigger trees.

Agree, LOVE Pace.

My vote is for the Maha, you can't buy the fruit and you'll never get tired of eating it.

FWIW, I've got 6 young Maha trees growing between Loxahatchee and WPB with more to be added in the future, so I anticipate having the fruit for sale in future seasons. Shameless plug  :D

I bought a Mamey here in Longwood Florida at a fruit stand called "Fancy Produce", never eaten one but want to try one.  How do you know when it's ripe and ready to eat?  Also, have never eaten a Maha but heard they're good.  I have a potted Mallika and was able to harvest ONE fruit last year and it was pretty good!

I vote mamey for agricultural diversity and the health of your 9 mango trees.

No canistel? Even if you don't like it as a stand alone fruit, it is AMAZING in fried rice.

Cookie Man - if your Mahachanok was bland and watery than something was wrong.  Picked and ripened properly it is outstanding.   Is it the best, dont think I could say that but thats me and tastes sre subjective...but I reiterate its not bland.

I agree that Pace produces early (March/April and sometimes into May) however to say no fruit is around at that time is wrong.  Alex has had mangoes over the last month and there are sapodilla,  caimito,  jabos, peaches and some other odds and ends.  The Excalibur is a late season, into October and last year I was eating them in November,  and taste is much better than Pace IMO.  I dont know why but there is something about the taste of Pace that does not wow me (dont get me wrong, I will eat them and have one in my fridge right now).  I also feel Pace has slightly more "string" in it.  I dont know howto ddescribe it, its not fiber likeca mango but does have a fiber like component that is slightly more than others.  I still say that Lorito is the best of all of them in every aspect.

For off season type of mamey, one that also fruits around March,  I would go with a green sapote.

The mahas I've had (2 seaons worth?) were from Harry's tree. Granted, they were probably not prime picked? Ohh well, I hope to one day taste a maha that gets me excited. I have really nice 15 gallon maha that I grafted from Harry's tree. It actually need to be potted up into a 25 really soon.

OK , I think these are the results;

1.) to replace the Lychee, a large Mamey- A 25 gallon perhaps. Im sure Rob can help me with this one- hopefully , it wont be a fortune.

2.) Im going to replace the Atemoya ( Ill post a pic) It hasnt grown very much in 3 years - It doesnt look sick, but maybe its a rootstock issue as has been suggested to me by more than one person. Rob, that Atemoya is from Excalibur so you might know what the root stock is. Im not going to buy another Atemoya from Excalibur because of what has happened here.

3.) I really am not crazy about the Pickering, seems like Im in the minority, but Ive tasted a bunch from different trees at different places- Id like a Maha Chanok in its place. I dont have a real asian-type asian mango in my collection.   Ill donate the Pickering to anyone on the forum who wants to pick it up.  It has tons of new growth on it but no fruit this year for whatever reason.

4.) Im going to "sneak" the Mammea in the ground somewhere - sounds like it may nver fruit . The tree at Mounts is very beautiful and different looking so I may be getting a nice looking tree, nevertheless. And if I do get fruit, it wont be for years By then, I can certainly convince my husband that " a few seeds musy have germinated"....

5.) Jaboticaba is wonderful; I had a large unbelievable fruiting specimin at my old house ( what a shame it was to have to let it go). The fruit was great but I like Mammey better and I dont have room.

6.) Cambuca??  I have no clue what that taste like.

Replacing a lychee? Ohh what a shame. We had 2 years without winter (and therefore without appreciable lychee crop), but I  think that the winter cold will return. Also, I believe that lychee trees need to be fairly mature before they start to produce well (ie, 10 years old).

You are kdding, right?

My sister has a 15 year old lychee which has never given fruit...... she lives in lake Worth

My in-laws have a 40+ yo huge Lychee in their yard which has only given fruit a few times .. they live in Belle Glade

On the other hand- my small Lychee had some fruit on it last year ( which of course didnt make it to maturity)

Anyway, it looks pretty dead

I think I paid 200-225 for a 25g Mamey from fruitscapes over here on the west coast. Large specimen, was flowering and holding fruit so definitely fruit ready. So maybe arm and leg maybe not depending on perspective I suppose but I think fairly reasonable for how old a 25g tree is and the labor/time it took to get to that point. I'd expect east coast to have comparable prices.

yikes. Harry's trees bear fairly consistently, and the mauritius trees that I've seen here which are mature bear fairly regularly. Any chance those non-bearing lychees are brewster, or worse, seedlings?
